I want to love PP but can't

Engines are a peculiar species. My 300ZX purrs like a kitten no matter what oil I put into it. My 3000GT didn't agree with synths at all. Sounded like the engine was going to come apart when it was started on cold mornings. You could literally feel the internals of the engine shaking. With dino, smooth as silk. My Olds Toronado Trofeo, silky smooth on anything. My gf's old 1998 Olds 88,loud and rough on synths, smooth on dino. Her 07 V6 Mustang, clanky and loud on synths(worst on M1)but soooo smooth on dino. Maybe some engines leave the factory tight and some loose? Who knows, huh.

This is what really makes the most sense. At the microscopic level, metal surfaces are not smooth,so therefore oil molecules of different sizes would "cushion better". Pretty simple imo.

I used to think the same until I tried red line and royal purple. Royal Purple is by far the quietest oil I have run.

Agreed. Who knows?

I have definitely heard differences, but I must say I never really felt much...

What works for one doesn't seem to work for others. For example, GregK24 in Florida reports that his K24 engine runs very quiet on PP 0W-20 or PU 5W-20 (I forget...maybe both). Mine runs pretty loud on both of those. But it's quiet on Mobil 1 0W-20 and 0W-30. I've used both and liked both. I'd still use either if I ran oil out to the full MM interval, but I don't, so I don't get any benefit. I'm currently using Formula Shell 5w30 and it's pretty quiet. Temperature certainly influences it, but even in the summer, I have found that a "loud" oil in my engine is a loud oil, no matter what. And a quiet oil (like Mobil 1 0W-20 for example) keeps the engine purdy quiet in the winter. I have not yet used Formula Shell in the winter. I just started buying it this spring at BJs.

Our Acura's J35 runs quiet on everything. I haven't yet found an oil that makes that engine noisy, with one slight exception. I've used M1 0W-20, M1 0W-30, PU 5W-20, PP 5W-20, PP 0W-20, PYB 5W-20, PYB 5w30, QSUD 0W-20, QSUD 5w30, and FormShell 5w30 (which is in it now). The slight exception is I could hear a slight "lifter tick" with M1 0w30 in the sump. The only reason I really noticed it, though, is because that oil was in the engine when I did the timing belt, and I was running the engine a lot in the garage purging the cooling system after the job was done. Otherwise, I couldn't hear anything. And I haven't noticed a similar noise out of other oils.

I have heard that some J35s exhibit loud piston slap when cold, but our engine is not one of those. Our K24 will...oil dependent. But our J35 is mouse-like.

When oil makes the engine too quiet it is a bad sign. When oil makes the engine too noisy it is a bad sign.

IDK
I've used PP 5w30 in three different engines and I've found it to be smooth and quiet.
I used PP 0W-20 for the '12 Accord's second run and I really can't see any difference between it, the FF and the last two runs of HGMO in engine smoothness, although the K24 isn't the smoothest or quietest engine Honda ever made.
