Hey all,
My chevy calls for 5w30 year round and if temps go below -20 which is pretty well all winter here to use 5w30 synthetic.
Would using 0W-40 hurt anything.I hear its a fantastic oil.

Completely depends on the 5w30 in question. And you can't just go by the Widman calc.

How low do temperatures get? Why not use a 0w-30?

I'm a fan of Mobil 1 0w-40, but I would never use it if I could use something thinner.

Depends how cold. Well below 0º C, probably. Otherwise, it really depends, as OVERK1LL said.

y

You can use it in the summer, but there are better choices for cold weather.

If it's the Winterpeg I remember as a youngster, we're talking -45 degrees on the really cold days...

and I would absolutely recommend a 0W30 for your application in a Manitoba winter...understanding that you either have this thing in a heated garage or have a block heater and battery warmer...

Go ahead and run it IF...you are not a short tripper in the winter. As long as you can get the oil up to temp you should be fine. It shears (almost always) to a thick 30wgt. anyway. Plus it has the highest VII level of any posted Mobil 1 oil.

Go for it and don't look back...lol

Again I would only be concerned with getting the oil up to temp.

Exactly, I see no advantage to running a 40 weight oil at all in Canada for normal driving.

+1

Give the 0W-40 a try, that is the fun part of a wide variety of oil flavors. I can relate as I want to try some Mobil 1 0w30 in my Corolla for the winter.

And then they walk wherever they have to go when the car won't start. Without a jacket or a scarf, even.

Not to pick on the folks from Florida, Texas, or from Australia for that matter, but they haven't seen anything like a Canadian winter.

When it is -20F (-30C) or colder, I don't think you want that 0W40 (and I am a fan of M1 0W40...posted a UOA from my own car with it)...I think you really want a 0W30. That oil will have a hard time getting up to temp in Winnipeg in the winter...I remember covering the car's radiator to get it to warm up...
