Over the last few days, I have been trying to figure out how to present this to you guys without causing an arguement. But as my ex-wife used to say, "You just can't help yourself." In one manner or another, the object of cost always is put out there, weither it be oil(s) or filters. Often the comparisons in posts are within a few cents of one another (Hey, I paid 6cents less then you!). Those who bravely state that they spend $3 or $4 per qt for oil are quickly taken out to the barn.

A few respondents tell us what they are putting their money into, but only a few. I feel good believing that many who spend a $1.49 per fluid qt, and $2.49 for a filter paid WAY over $20k (heck - more like way over $30k) for their vehicle and then brag how long they will go before their next OCI!

If I admitted to paying $60 per OCI (yes, done myself), EVERY 6 months averaging 2,220 miles in that period, I'm sure its "out to the barn" with me.

Oops!

But still, I don't get driving an expensive or quality keeper vehicle for long periods utilizing the cheapest poo-poo you can find. Lord forbid if there isn't a coupon available to use with the store's sale price!

So, I think you're

some take pride in finding the bargains. others play cost as a fallback position to defend their chosen oil against a higher priced competitor

Even the most expensive synthetic oil is cheap compared to most costs related to repairing and maintaining a vehicle. I've never had a problem spending more money for quality oil. Sure, I don't want to waste money, but I place more value in the peace-of-mind I get from knowing my cars are properly maintained and using top-quality oil and related products. If there's a sale or a rebate offer, well, great. However, I don't lose a wink of sleep knowing I paid full-price for my oil. Then again, I'm the kind of person that would rather pay a bit more for a product at a local "mom and pop" store that actually gives you friendly service, than some big-box warehouse with workers who would rather be talking on their cell phones than helping customers.

I never sweat the price of oil. I buy what I like, on sale or not. I'm pretty frugal in several aspects of my life. But certain things like motor oil, I really don't get too worked up about when it comes to price. Its only 2x per year for us. Buy a good oil, good filter and drive.

I agree. To take it a little further, people actually get offended by other people using expensive stuff and not stretching out the OCI.

My car was about $42,000 after the interest on the loan (yes, I overpaid) and I plan on keeping it until the wheels fall off. I don't make a lot of money, in fact I make less than half of what I did when I bought the car but I know where not to cheap out. I want the best oil I can get. We're talking about less than a $50 difference every 6 months from most expensive to cheapest. People get way too excited over pennies. Quite honestly if the engine failed in this car I would be in for a world of hurt.

It's the same as the guys that run a 20wt in a 30wt spec'd engine while asking the question if it will damage the engine just to save a few cents a week on gas.

I try to find the best oil at the lowest price. I don't fill my engine with what I find on sale, I try to find on sale what I want to fill my engine with.

It's a hobby... I use high cost oil and change more frequently than needed, but I'm happy with me and don't need others approval.

PRICELESS!

...but in any case, I think the point here is that cost is a personal choice, and there is no right and wrong. I always believe one should do the best they can with the money they have. That's just me.

I use 6 quarts of Redline Oil and a top shelf filter.....both are changed every 90 says.

Relative to a tank of fuel or two, oil cost is just not that much. I generally live very frugally (I pretend I don't have ANY income), but lubricants I don't cheap out on. People who pride themselves on low cost lubes I have no problem with, but these fellows should just stop it with the trying to convince others their spending habits are wrong. It's kinda weird, IMHO.

I stick with the common wisdom here: use whatever you like as long as it has the manufacturers' required rating ( SL, CJ-4, etc.) and the recommended viscosity. For most of us, under most conditions, a "dino" oil will get you as far a more expensive synthetic. There is as much to be said for the "peace of mind" factor as any quantitative measurement of an oil. If I can get a sale, like the current on Mobil Delvac 1300, or the 5L jugs of LubroMoly I got for $.05 each (that's right, a nickle!!) then I'm on it. My truck likes 15 Qts. on a change, so a sale is important to me.

Aside from the $10.50/$11.00 5QT/Jug of Mobil Clean 5000, i would love to find oil on close out for $1-2 per qt. Mobil Clean 5k is $2.57 per quart, the jug is more economical at walmart. I have never seen a close out on oil except Havoline DS 15w40 at one Walmart in East Tim-buck-to.

Use what makes you happy, what is affordable and provides your vehicle with the protection it needs. Basically any SM rated oil with a reasonable OCI...lol thanks Stevie :P

I agree with you completely. That's exactly what I try to do. I try to get things on sale that I like, and use them. For things that I wouldn't typically like, I put in others cars
grin2.gif
For example, the ProLine oil I have in my stash goes into my sister's car and her fiance's dad's truck. My sister's Fiance gets Peak or Quaker State. For those very close to me though like my mom and my girlfriend, I don't cheap out on.

I don't see the point in spending alot of money in something that will give me the same relative performance as the other that is half the price.

I use ST/Delco filters most of the time. They are decent for 5k and I use Dino valvoline and chevron supreme
I use just a regular synthetic in my diffential, because it gets the job done at a good cost.

But, use whatever you want!

If you like 10qt oil, its your money.

I tore my engine apart and it was super clean! On dino and cheap filters. It's got 125k and is running great (knock on wood.)

Then again I enjoy changing fluids and maintaining my truck, synthetic causes me to do this less.

A oil change costs me 12.50.

I feel there`s a happy medium........no need to buy the most exotic oil known to mankind,BUT,you don`t want to run the cheapest junk you can get your hands on. I believe in using the best quality oil you need, without being too cheap and/or without going into complete overkill.

But when it comes down to it,oil is cheap and engines are expensive.

I'm just cheap....I LOVE a bargain. Whether it's a $2.00 purchase or a House, I want a "deal".

That said, others can spend their cash anyway they want! Boutique oil employs a lot of people here and abroad, I say thats great and the way it should be. More choices are always better than less. When the whole world becomes "Wal-Mart" quality we'll all wonder how we let that happen.

I buy oil that is on sale, But I don't buy just ANY oil.
I run short OCI's because it makes me take the time to spend a moment under the hood, and check other things.
I know that any brand of an approved oil used on the (short) recommended OCI, will not kill my cars or truck.
If anyone has a problem with that.....Too Bad!

I agree with both of you.....I find what I want and stock up when the "gettin is good"

Here's the alternative question I would ask the ultra tightwad oil changer. Where are their millions in savings? Since most here that are millionaires don't mind spending money on their toys ..that means you're probably not among them.

So, where does the money go? Cell phone? Texting? More WM trips (insert your consumption spot of choice THD, Target (pronounce Tars-jay) ..or LL Bean-Starbucks..whatever) Beer? Gambling? Just where is your savings going?

Not that I have a problem with any or all of the above, but before you denounce some other person's distraction ..hobby ..procedure ..habit ..take a real critical eye on where your missing stack of dusty greenbacks went. More than likely it just enabled more non-durable consumption somewhere else.
