Prime for my family is pure convience. The cost savings no idea except the $4 is fuel is waste driving around and the item that is worth way more the. $99 fee my time I just use it off my smartphone. Kids love the streaming music and video.

Not always. I did more Ebay than Amazon. But since I got prime i do way more on Amazon than ebay. The extra rewards card alone with prime more than pays for prime.

So what other online retailers offer 2 day shipping, free returns (on many items), streaming videos, streaming audio, online storage, special discounts and other things for free?

I have had a free family prime membership for almost 3 years at no cost to me. Rules have changed with it so I finally had to get my own prime, but as a student I am getting 6 months free then 1/2 price for a few years.

Key word "BASIC" as in processing and shipping orders in a timely manner.

Have Prime for years and I think the price difference between what I can find on Amazon and in store more than makes up for the annual cost of Prime. Prime Music and Prime Video are nice perks as well. And with Prime I usually get deliveries in 2 days even on a Sunday.

(Electric back massager and Nikon rechargable battery.)

I can vouch for this. I try to always purchase items from Amazon rather than third party prime vendors, but ended up getting a counterfeit Bosch oxygen sensor (I got fooled by the vendor using the name Amazing or something that looked like 'Amazon' at first glance). I was able to return the part and immediately re-ordered it with Amazon as the vendor - got the correct part. The weird thing is the fake part was in an authentic looking Bosch box but didn't look like the correct part nor did the connector fit the mating connector. The really strange thing is that the sensor body looked like the generic Bosch version, but was stamped with the BMW specific part number. A call to Bosch put me in touch with an application specialist who was certain it was a knock off and didn't even want to see pictures of it because in his words "fake parts are all over the place".

It seems pricing and delivery are a function of stock and location. Sometimes prime takes 3-5 days, sometimes I can get free next day or even same day delivery. I suspect that is due to having two Amazon distribution centers within 30 miles of my house.

+1

I only started using Prime a few years ago when I was in college because I could get the books I needed fairly quickly from Amazon. Prime definitely makes the difference, especially on items you need fairly quickly. There are things (such as small engine parts) I've ordered on amazon that were the same price as ebay but arrived about a week sooner than ebay would have.

Amazon Prime and Costco are two memberships I find well worth having. The value I get out of both far offsets the annual fee. Even better, the annual rebate check I get from Costco is more than the membership fee!

The thing you really need to watch out for is the new way they handle returns.

Used to be, my refund was issued as soon as my return shipment was scanned.

My most recent returns are taking weeks to process. These returns were due to defective items.

Pretty dirty of them to be that way all of a sudden, without warning.

I just returned something and it was processed as soon as they scanned it.

Amazon used to be amazing, in the past couple or few years they have really taken a nosedive.

They are still OK, simply not as good as they once were, and I do agree that Prime orders are not NECESSARILY as much the value as they once were.. There can still be additional shipping charges, thus negating the $99 a year, it used to be a true no question as to which way to go with Amazon.

If you do not have Prime and get everything shipped Standard and grouped into as few shipments as possible, you can still take advantage of the add-on deals and if you can wait slightly longer for your orders, maybe you are at work or out of the house all the time anyway! then that further blurs the lines of how Amazon simply is not as as it was even a short time ago. Frequent customers may still benefit from Prime.

I have no need for their digital content. I would venture to say that most of us do not. Particularly Google and Apple customers. So that's another strike against wonderful Prime.

I have both, what free digital content options do Google and Apple provide?

Well. If both cost, then would not Amazon be redundant? Do you notice overlapping content or not so much?

Amazons been OK by me. Customer service, the few times I've called has been really good. That said, I will not pay for Prime, and as others have said, shipping time has increased. I no longer buy time sensitive items like dog food from them. I found a local place with prices just as good.

Since this is an oil forum, has anybody seen their oil prices? All over the map and constantly changing. Sometimes I laugh at what they want for jug of motor oil.

You are not the only one who has gotten this impression!

I concur that the firm has lost its edge and is much more interested in attracting prime customers. My last 2 orders from Amazon were undeliverable and now charges sales tax so yes its appeal as a retailer is gone.

I doubt Amazon will miss you. Taking weeks to scrape together $35 worth of stuff that ships free isn't making them any money.

Most states require you to pay sales tax for items purchased online. However-essentially nobody paid that tax. Therefore many states have struck a deal with Amazon to collect that tax.

In Utah the state just struck a deal where Amazon collects the tax and keeps 18% of what Amazon collects.

It's coming to a state near you.......

We've had Prime for several years now and it's been well worth the money for us. We've saved way more than the $99 cost every year. We also just had a distribution center open up about 20 minutes from our house so I've gotten some stuff free 2 hour shipping. AS far as returns go it all depends on who the seller is. The few things I returned that were fullfilled by Amazon were credited as soon as they scanned it. However, I bought some rotors that I returned and it cost the price of one of the rotors to ship the pair back. So far I've only received the credit back to my card for one of the rotors. And it took forever just to get that one. I'm still trying to get the other credit.
