You're forget the fact that anything is construed as a weapon in a court of law, if used as a weapon. Technically your argument holds no water. Come at me with a Maglight using it as a weapon you'll be getting real friendly with .45 cal. lead slugs.

That is why it is only defense. A maglite would be a terrible offensive weapon, it can be OK if someone came at you. There is a differance when it comes to premeditation. Filling a maglite with pennies like my cousin did is pre-meditated. Where I live it is hard to even own a pistol, impossible to carry. Did you see the new revolver taurus makes, .45 or 410 gauge shells? It is suppossed to be the ultimate anti-carjacking weapon. Impact guns has a demo video online. Can't have anything like that here, I'm lucky I'm allowed to own my SKS here.
As far as non-firearm defense only from a carjack type situation I think the ultimate is a small to medium size halon fire extinguisher. I keep one in the console of 67 gto, not because I'm scared of getting carjacked or roadraged, but there are several things on the car that increase the risk of a scary fire.

How old are you?

Local cops troll for tickets at night using that. Drive along with all lights blazing at everyone

Give them all your lights, and you go 18 over the limit...unless you argue in court, but how is headlights related to your speed ?

BTW, two blinded people is less safe than only one.

The cops down here get right on your rear bumper with their lights on trying to get you to do just that...which is a light violation, and then you have to go to court to fight the fact that you did in fact do a light violation.

Showing up at a gunfight with a flashlight seems pointless.

Sadly, I had no answer, just "look away" as best as you can, until the offender passes.

That was my advice for her, but for me I now employ two specific strategies:

For ONCOMING blue or other HID vehicles; I light up my brights right in their face until they totally pass. I do this each and every time.

For TRAILING blue or other HID vehicles; blinding me through my rear-view mirrors, I adjust the mirror fully down to kill the glare, then ease up on the gas letting the offender pass, the follow behind the offender blasting him with my BRIGHTS as long as possible.

I am [censored] sick of these people too. I do the same you do, blind them back!

If they want to run me off the road I will take atleast one of them with my 45.

Wow, a lot of mad max types here.

The best way to avoid trouble and go home to your family is to avoid trouble all together.

I have 2.6 million candlepower at my disposal via four 50 watt KC HID's and an arsenal and you can bet your [censored] I wouldn't arm either in anger due to some douche running illegal lights on the road.

X10 here, I was following a guy the other day for a few miles, he was doing 45-50mph on a 55mph two lane, I wasn't tailgating him, just looking for a safe interval to pass, he keeps staring at me from the side mirror in his pickup, then suddenly throws up his arms and slows waaay down. I do the same thing, keep a decent distance, and when I was safely able to do so, passed him, and "kept on going" You just never know what is going to trigger an angry reaction in some people..

I noticed not as many nimrods behind me when we had a mirror in the back seat when we were moving stuff to our new place at night a few years ago.

But though alot of this is tempting, I leave my "combat" driving to my game system (I'm 40 and still like my games). :)

these bright lights are a menace when they are behind your car.
Back in the late 90's, my best friend had a smoking chrysler lebaron. whenever someone tailgated him with their brights on, he would floor the engine to wide open throttle and the people behind him would fall back because of the black smoke. he would say "oops, my engine [censored]"

Around my parts (SoCal), its usually the lifted trucks who annoy me the most. Regular cars with HIDs and stuff don't really bother me, its the lifted trucks whose lights are always aimed perfectly in my eye. For a while, i actually adjusted my HIDs to shine higher than they are supposed to, therefore the only people who would be blinded (on-coming traffic) were lifted trucks... They got really [censored] at me and once had a guy chase me down and start cussing at me at a stop light. I just asked if he enjoyed his own medicine and drove off. After a couple months, i got tired of seeing my headlights on billboards so i aimed it back to stock height. I used to high beam other people as well and such, but have gotten to the point where i honestly don't really care anymore and just ignore it. Its not worth the hassle of some crazy idiot trying to start problems

I'm not a big fan of the HID lights either, even stock ones are annoying. I don't want to be involved in a road rage accident so all I do is give a quick highbeam flash like I think their highbeams are on. It gets the point across that the lights are annoying but not being a jerk about it.
For tailgaters I have my side mirrors adjusted for the blind spots so usually I don't have a problem. Just flick the rearview mirror and carry on.
I'm getting older(wiser?) and am a father now so avoiding pointless/dangerous conflict on the road seems like a good policy.

hehe
something like this happened to one of my friends, only in his case, the guy in front was going EXACTLY the speed limit - which still annoyed my impatient friend, who normally drives 5-6 mph above the limit, so he kept semi-tailgating the car in front, and the car slowed down, even went to the very right of the road to let my friend pass, and my friend thinking "at least he's not selfish, he let me pass" , etc, passed him pretty quick, only to see some blue lights flashing on the car he just passed and the car suddenly racing to pull him over ...it was kinda funny - he only got a warning/yelling.

He got lucky. Around here THEY are the ones that tailgate and don't pull over those that do but rarely.

I always have problems with people going exactly or below the speed limit when i was behind them.I found out why when i saw a Expedition like mine in the same MA state police blue with black push bar and 2 oblong lights in the middle just like mine.Last night even a town cop waved at me as he passed me on the other side.

I got the burning oil thing down. Creep up on me with your beamers on and you're gonna have a misty oily windshield. Just hit the wiper switch, I dare you. Aw, shucks, you gotta pull over and clean your glass, I'm so sorry, I won't let it happen again ('til you creep up on me).
