Hyundia OEM filters only?

Great find Jim!

So the question remains... why are there multiple claims on the net of bad engine knock that disappeared when a Hyundai/KIA OEM filter was reinstalled? Perhaps they just had a bad/defective filter in the first place?

That's my thought too, or they got some inferior counterfeit filters off ebay or similar place of purchase. It would be interesting to see which filters actually cause a distinct difference, and dissect them to see if there is something wrong with them.

I purchased a few Hyundai/KIA OEM filters a while ago. They seem to be good filters, but there is no information on their specs. Just last weekend when I changed the oil, I threw on a Napa Platinum, and I have yet to experience any noise. I have a Napa Gold, and a Purolator Classic in reserve. I will try those next and report my findings. I like the feel and construction of the OEM filter, but without the published specs, I can not put my full faith behind them.

I had cold engine knock on a purolator filter with my 2008 Accent. It would only happen after about 4k on the oil. Just changing the oil and keeping a purolator would stop the knock again.

I was using 5w30 M1.

Using Hyundai filters I have never had a cold engine knock.

The cold knocking issue gets even stranger ...

My brother had a 2002 Elantra and all the aftermarket filters were different sizes than the OEM. The top end of that engine would be noisy with some filters.

The Champ Labs document is interesting.

It's especially interesting because my Sonata got a horrible knock with a Champ-Labs made STP filter from Autozone. The knock was while the engine was running. Sound recording posted below. In the recording the car was fully warm and I had been driving it around town when the knock appeared.

Since I've owned the vehicle I've also used Beck/Arnley with no problem and it had a Fram OCOD on it when I bought it, which didn't make any noise, either.

I choose to mainly use OEM filters or Auto 7 filters (which are just OEM filter with an Auto 7 sticker added to the box). But I would encourage people to use other filters without concern if they want to. Just be aware that if you get a noise, try replacing the filter to see if it will fix it.

^^^ Wow, that sounds bad! I can't believe an oil filter would cause such an engine knock, but apparently there is something about these Hyundai/KIA engines that makes them sensitive to a slight change in the oiling system.

^^^ WoW! that does sound horrible!
I have enough OEM filters to last me a while and when down to a few, I'll run by a dealer and buy more to keep up on the stash.
