We bought a 2013 Sonata with GDI 2.4 and I have read on numerous sites that this engine is picky about filters. I bought a ten pack of the oem filters but want to know what other filters this 2.4 likes.

i have the elantra with the 1.8. I use the factory filters, they are pretty heavy and seem well made. There have been several posts about Hyundai's having start-up noise with non factory filters.

I am using the OEM filter and PP 5W20 on my 2.4 liter GLS OC.

Kind of curious why there might be start up noise on non-OEM filters when the filter hangs vertically off the bottom of the engine, which means it should always be full of oil on start up.

OEM all the way. Well built, reasonably priced and keep the engine running much smoother. You can use the equivalent M1 or K&N filter in a pinch but I have noticed (especially in the winter months) it is best to stick with OEM KIA/Hyundai to prevent ticks and clicks;)

Great engine BTW. I did a UOA on mine @ 12k and it was absolutely beautiful. I try to use PU due to the low NOACK.

I have 3.5 engine in the XG350 and have used various aftermarket brands of oil filters as well as OEM and have the dreaded lifter tick some times in winter. The OEM works well at resolving this issue, I have found that the Mahle OC330 (made in austria) from rockauto works just as well as OEM in this regard and very high quality and reputable company.I use the Mahle currently. Cost a little over $2.00 each (have a stash of 8) FWIW.

In my experience one of the worst filters I have used on the XG350 was an STP filter and I believe the K&N and WIX(NAPA) lots of lifter tick in winter. Purolator, Motorcraft were better not quite as good as OEM and Mahle. I assume you use the spin on filter (IE; purolator L14459 or equivalent) and not the cartridge type. I hate having to go to the dealer for parts especially maintenance items unless I have to, I like options.

I think there is a possibility Mahle makes the OEM filters for Hyundai/KIA, read that somewhere on here but now I've forgotten the specifics.

I don't think that the noise is caused by a dry filter, but rather the bypass setting. When the oil is cold and thick, the bypass opens quicker. There is anecdotal evidence that the bypass setting on the Hyundai OEM is a lot less than on the aftermarket filters, which cover a wide range of engines.

I've used Napa Gold, P1 and Purolator Classic and none of them were particularly "bad", but OEM was best in my mind. The thing that helped the startup noise the most was switching to 0w-20 this winter.

However, I agree with several members above. Hyundai/KIA OEM filters are the way to go. Great construction and a great price. Its all I use now.

Must have been Mann then, not Mahle. My bad!

My wifes 2011 Hyundai SF V6 is not noisy at all... 22K miles and still running smooth. No rattles on cold start and quiet at idle when warm. Kept the FF till 3k miles and then went with syn oils.

I read at the Hyundai forum, that some owners drained out the FF at around 1K and they seem to have start up rattles.I am starting to believe that the FF should stay in at least 3K or more for todays new engine breakin... I am old school and always changed out oil early but times are changing and I am still learning. LOL...

You can definitely tell the difference when ours has been started stone cold, (2012 3.5 v-6) but I'd hardly call it noisy. It was a rental car the first 12 months of it's life, so I doubt the factory fill was changed early. Must indeed be a good thing.

It also has dealer installed QSGB in it right now, which is very high in boron. I have noticed in the past high boron oils tend to quiet an engine down quite well. Perhaps that's Hyundai/KIA's reason for endorsing Quaker State?

Ours will be getting full syn next OCI though. With an OEM filter!

I have a 2011 2.4 Sonata with 40k. OEM is by far the best, but Ive used Purolators with good luck. I've never had any knocks or rattles. Temp rarely goes below 40*.
