Hybrid Spin-on filters

The May-June issue of "Practicing Oil Analysis" magazine has an article about spin on filters that are combination full flow/bypass units if anybody is interested. Apparently there is an internal bypass valve that produces enough back pressure to direct some oil to the bypass unit much like using a bypass filter with a bolt-on adaptor. The part that was new was they claim that full flow elements get degraded by time due to the erosion by small particles that pass through them. By filtering out the smaller particles, the full flow filter media lasts longer overall. This is a new one on me.
 
If bypass filtration is considered/needed it is better to separate the two. They are completely different functions and to better control and understand the process they are better kept apart. I feel that the full flow filters have a big enough job to do without giving up space and flow for another process. Also such a filter would only complicate figuring out what's going on inside the engine. I think this is an example of a solution looking for a problem. I prefer to look at things the other way around.

When I change a full flow filter, I take a dremel to the old filter to open it up and see what it trapped. To date, the filters have always been so clean that I wonder why I bothered changing them. The only time I ever got any worthwhile crud was after an AutoRx cycle on an older engine.

My wifes minivan (Chrysler 3.3L V6 engine) has been running a Trasko combined full flow / bypass oil filter from 50K to 180K miles, changing the bypass element every 8K miles. The engine runs like new and doesn't consume any oil between changes.

I'm sold on the concept but the new design shown in POA allocates most of the space to the full flow filter and that's just about the opposite of the Trasko which has most of the space used by the bypass "toilet paper". I'd rather have the bigger bypass and smaller full flow of the Trasko.
 
Dual-flow or combination filtration is nothing new.
Cost is higher.

Just about every filter manufacturer makes combination spin-on filters. But, you probably won't find one in your thread mount size or small enough to fit underhood of the typical vehicle. But, if you can find a remote mount in the required thread, you're on to something.
 
Has anyone tried the filter that fits the 7.3 powerstroke engine? I believe the number is LF9027. I am curious as to whether they filter better/longer than a high quality filter such as the EaO99. I can get them for about $24-26, including tax and shipping.
 
Just sent my analysis away today
Had 5800 miles on this sample using Delo 400 5W 40 synthetic and an LF9027
Will post the results when I get them back

I have used it. not worth it in my mind. ITs specs aren't very good. the full flow is rated at 30 micron nominal and the bypass is rated at 10 micron nominal. Thats not very good. I used it one oil change and sold the case of them I had at a loss and went back to the wix full flow and bought a frantz bypass.
 
Most of the small Japanese diesels use a full flow and by-pass filter in the one canister.They are twice the price of a normal filter,and are changed every 10,000km.I've cut them open....all good inside.
