How to get to filter on 2000 Olds Intrigue?

First off, great forum and a great group of people here. Although I must say, my head hurts from info. overload!

I have a 2000 Olds Intrigue and need help w/ the filter. It is the cartridge type thats fits into a filter cap that you unscrew from the engine. Problem is, the cap is a very strange shape (lots of edges) and I'm not sure how to remove it.

Someone told me a standard filter "cap" wrench would work, but I haven't tried it yet.

So, I know some of you "oil experts" will be able to point me in the right direction...what's the best tool to use for this filter cap?

As for my second car, I just purchased a 2004 Honda Accord EX V6. I will be posting another thread about the filter and oil change for it! I found a source online that still has plenty of the old, discontinued Honda filters, and I'm wondering if they would be better than the new, smaller ones.

I thought the filter sockets fit them, but I just checked and the one I had seems to be too big. My 1 1/4'' socket fits just fine, a short extension and a breaker bar and no problem. Just remember, it is plastic, don't tighten too tight. I think the cartridge is actually easier to change.

It is hard to say about the big and little Honda filters. They may have packed as much filter area in the new, smaller filters or used a better media. You can't be sure, even cutting them open and measuring the area. There is no doubt about it, the trend is to less filter area.

By 1 1/4 socket, do you mean something similar to this ?

I do realize its plastic, that's why I want to make sure I use the right tool.

labman is thinking of the ecotech motor which has the oil filter cap up top which on your car it's down below so that socket will not work. For your oil filter cap there is a "special" filter cap tool just for it or I have used those spring loaded spider looking filter tool which tightens on the outside of that funky looking cap. You will have to use alot of leverage to break it loose though. Now putting it back on you'll have to use a filter strap for that or if you get the tool it will make it easier. Hope this helps

And I'm sure it's bigger in diameter than 1 1/4"... more like 2-3".

Any idea where I can find the special tool you mentioned?

Yeah, but bigJ is right, it sounds like you are working on a far different beast. Cartridges seem to be making a comeback. I think I am lucky to have one of the better designs even if I am being ripped off on the cartridges. Maybe prices will come down. I can remember paying $5 at the jobber for an AC in 1977 for my truck. Now I buy $2 ST's at Wally's

My wife had the 1999 version of the Intrigue 3.5. Nice car. I used a plain old steel strap wrench with a rubber sheet on the inside of the strap for better friction. Messy when it came open. I took to using a heavy rubber glove.

I liked the car a lot, but had 4 injectors go bad between 40k and 60k. The fuel filter is easy to change. I suggest changing yours every 30k and using a fuel injector cleaner every 15k right before an oil change.

This car has a huge 6 quart sump. I used dino oil at the time. Today, I'd use Mobil 1 and change it when the oil monitor light comes on. (6-7.5k)
