If I am preparing to turn left, this what happens:
Start off with the car going straight
Turn on turn signal
Begin to turn
*turn signal turns off*

So the signal will disengage while I turn instead of when I am straightening out. It will turn off when straightening out but I need it to stay on longer. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to start with this?

Most turn signal switches now have the cancel mechanism built right into the switch. Take the column covers off and usually the whole switch is just held in with a couple screws and a wiring harness.

Yeah, just looked into this further. Some cars it plugs right in. Mine I need to remove air bag and steering wheel. This is gonna be a pain. Maybe I can talk my dad into helping :-)

Hope you don't need a new combination switch - wipers and turn signal in same unit - not familiar with your car. But those things are big $$$.

Yeah, for a new unit -just the part, not installed- is around $500 (!!!). I'm becoming a big fan of quality used parts. $75 to $150 will get me a used one from a parts dealer and I found someone parting out a car who had one for $20 but was not quite the right one for me. $500 is insane though and I'm sure the labor would be steep to go with it.
