How to build an oil filter cutter

I had thought of mounting it upside down but do not have a good place to do it.

I also thought of finding a small rectangular baking pan it would just fit in and leave it in there. As it accumulates oil just dump it in the drain oil container. Now that i said that out loud i like that idea even more. I think i will take it's measurements and put them in my wallet. Next time i go to a good will/thrift store i will try to pick up a used baking pan. I should be able to find something for under $2.

With those slots in the vice, you could mount long bolts on the 4 corners to act as legs that the unit sits on upside down.

Or, mount the unit upside down in a milk case with the open side to the front for access, like the red one below. A pan in the bottom to collect drippings.

Or, construct a bracket so you can mount the unit upside down, sticking out from your bench vise.......or use vice grips to attach it off your work bench. When finished, unclamp and store it where ever. Lots of solutions.

The only improvement I would do would is nix the oil absorbing wood and use plastic or metal.

Easiest thing to do is drain the filter before you cut it open. To do this, simply break off the heads off a few Q-tips and stick the shaft of the Q-tip inside the inlet holes in the base plate to open the ADBV. Then sit the filter base down in a funnel that is draining into a jug or something. Let the filter sit like this and drain for a day or two, and it will then have minimum puking when cut open - I do this every time I cut open an oil filter to minimize the oil mess.

Cool tool. My filter cutter tool consists of a hacksaw and a vice. Maybe one day I'll spring for a Dremel, but I doubt it. I'm cheap.
