Does anyone know how much synthetic oil is actually in blends? I mean, they can add as little as a teaspoon and call it a blend and no one would ever know!

I thought I read somewhere on here that the legal min. is 10% or 15% in order to be called a "blend", but I'm not 100% sure.
If I'm right, I'm sure that the public thinks it's 50/50.

Maxlife is listed (MSDS) as 12-22% synthetic. Would think they would take advantage to label it a blend. When I call Valvolilne about Durablend, they usually tell me the Durablend is about 30 percent synthetic.

Some folks like to make their own blend, mixing regular and synthetic of the same company so they know what they have.

I am very interested in learning what, if any, criteria there are for labeling an oil a blend.

I don't know if there is a legal limit. Years ago Andy Grantelle (STP) and Indy car owner showed him pouring about 1 table spoon of STP in his race car that "PROVED" it was the greatest thing since oil. I lost my respect for any blend unless I READ the percentage.

Mobil Drive clean says 23 percent on the quart bottle and in their spects.

Mobil Drive Clean Plus bills itself as having 23% more "performance additives." I've interpreted that to mean antiwear additives, detergent, etc. Not the % synthetic oil. Every time I've asked Mobil for the % synthetic of their blends in the past, they say it is "proprietary."

The only synthetic blend I've seen that reveals factually the amount of synthetic oil in it is the MSDS for Schaeffers. May be others too if one were to search.

Strictly on PAO blends it don't take alot to start seeing increased performance especially when the PAO is used as a cold performance additive instead of a base oil .

The Schaeffers 10w30 stays in grade well so less VII's because of the PAO are probable .

Some blends in Europe are 30% PAO .

Motorcraft may be the hottest deal going right now. Both the 5w20 and 5w30 are described on the back label as being made from "synthetic/hydrocracked" base oil, but are priced lower than many dinos.

Eddie, I think what you mean are Mobil Drive Clean Plus oils, not regular Drive Clean oil. I doubt there is any synthetic oil in the regualr Drive Clean product. The only thing I found on the Mobil.com site regarding the percent synthetic is this sentence from the Drive Clean Plus product data sheet: "These products contain a mixture of high-performance synthetic fluid and quality conventional base stocks with premium performance additives boosted by 23 % which means more advanced detergent, dispersant, and anti-oxidants to help maintain or restore engine cleanliness."

Unless I'm misreading that, or there is another area on their web site I'm not seeing, that tells me there is an additional 23% amount of additives (like zinc, moly, ets.), not 23% synthetic oil.

I could be wrong, but thats how I read it.

Keep in mind that there are various quality synthetics as well as various quality conventional base oils. Mixing Group I base oil with some low cost/quality Group III is indeed a synthetic blend, but likely no better a finished product that an oil made from Group II+ base oil.

Schaeffer, maybe a few other specialty oil blenders, gets the performance of their synthetic blends equal to most full synthetics by using top quality conventional base oil, top quality synthetic, and a top quality additive package. You don't find this in any over-the-counter syn blend.

Used oil analyses are the yardstick to measure by, not the claims on the labels and the web sites.

I'm not too worried about how much synthetic is in the blends. For profit reasons, I'm assuming that its low enough.

What I'm really worried about is how much synthetic is in my "full synthetic" oils since those words are not usually defined by the company or on the bottle! Percents are never listed.
This could be why the Schaeffers blend does so well.
I love to know how much "additive carrier" and "non synth" additives are in all the store bought and boutique oils.

This is the reason i don't like synthetic blends. There's no way for the average consumer to know how much synthetic base stock is in a given blend. Most synthetic blends are about 10 percent group 3 base stock, and at that treat rate there's absolutley positively no way you are going to see an increase in egine protection and performance. If you want to go synthetic, go with full synthetic. With a product like Chevron/Havoline the base stock is so good it will acctually out perfom the so called synthetic blends, which are strictly marketing to get you to pay $1.50 more for a product that will not out perfom Chevron/Havoline. Chevron/Havoline uses a base stock that is considered unconventional, but they don't try to decive the consumer into thinking they are getting a full synthetic. These products provide the best engine protection and have out perfomed full synthetics in the area of engine wear.
