From $22.79 (rebuilt) to $267 new. Most of the reman are from the $23-$70...

Beck/Arnley are $53-65.

Sounds about right to me, last I checked. at least its not the rear caliper on an 2006 passat - like 600 for those ones

Nonsense. A quick search of a popular online parts retailer shows a rear caliper for an 06 Passat at $216. Rebuild service available if you ship your caliper away runs about $160.

If the price your getting seems too high, it most likely is. Work the 'net and shop around if you don't want to be soaked.

How many labor hours does it take to replace 2 front calipers? Should I do it on something that was recently rebuilt a month ago or just let the mechanic replace the pads first? Only 1 piston on the passenger side was re-built.

Any chance the calipers contribute to the squeals? I rather not replace them if it is not their fault. OEM stuffs tend to last longer and more durable than AAP parts.

I have a source that offers each front caliper for $20.79 including new hardware. If someone is asking $200 for a caliper, you ought to tell him that the car isn't even worth that much.

I see price in the 20s to 90s online but most shops I spoke are quoting them as in the 200s for a front pair, which come out to be around 100 each. Since I take care of my cars to not need part replacement more often than once every 9-10 years, I don't know what things should run. Additionally, I don't know which brands are good and which to stay away from. That is a side effect of being easy on brakes and only require replacement of parts every 100k miles or so. The calipers are original and the car has 300k miles. The rotor and pads saw 150k miles.

I think I am just going to leave the calipers alone and see if the other problem goes away without caliper changed. I don't want calipers from AAP if I can help it.

Well if you're getting a quote from a repair shop I'm assuming they would also install them, so $50 worth of parts add labor and that would explain the $200+ quote. Of course if you're uneasy doing your own brake work then it's money wisely spent to make sure it's done properly and safely.

If you are going to do the yourself then $200 is way to much to spend. Like your own research shows, they can be had for a lot less. I've tried all different reman. calipers: OEM Ford, Autozone, AAP, Napa, and have never noticed any difference in quality among them. They've all worked just fine. So get what makes you happy and know it doesn't have to cost too much.
