I was wondering how many people are currently using the semi-syn 10w30 Trop Artic? (dollar tree), and how many people are planning on getting UOA's on the oil?
I bought 10 quarts of TropArtic Syn Blend at Dollar Tree and I put 4 quarts in my mom's 2001 Civic. I didnt notice any difference between Havoline and TA. She only drives 5000 miles per year.
from the spec sheets, many believe it is identacle to the motorcraft synblends. Very likally could be. which would make it a very reasonable oil for an incredably good price..
though, it seems to be disapearing from dollartree as the cost has gone too high. Can find it at wallyworld sometimes for around $1.20-$1.40/qt.
My local mechanic has 2 55G drums. It's the only oil he uses...probally due to price, but he likes it. He alternates 10w30 for summer 5w30 for winter. He probally is scared off of 10w-40 from the olde days, but that's what I'd use. I checked his latest barrel, SM 10w30.
I'm using some of the 10w30 in my 88 toyota pickup, just put it in today. Ive had the truck since 199K miles, currently at 208.5K miles, been using Chevron 10w-40. I cant tell much of a difference with the Trop Artic stuff. I'll prolly go buy out the stuff at the local Dollar Tree though
I went to my local DOLLARTREE and they no longer have the TA syn-blend. A month or so ago they had plenty. I guess I won't be adding to my oil stash Thank God. Accumulating oil is an addiction that I am trying to go 'cold turkey' on.
Trop artic is a very good engine lubricant,,,compairs and often excells over many popular brands,,for the $$,check it out,,though wish they had a 5w-20 semi,,,,Phillips also makes a pretty decent 15w40 also.....BL
Just put a new battery in the ol' hand calculator and was itchin' to try it out . . . 23 cases = 276 quarts; @ 5 quarts per oil change, that's over 55 oil changes. Even at just 3,000 mile OCIs, and arbitrarily figuring roughly 3 mos between changes, that's over 165 months or more than a 13 freakin' year supply of motor oil on hand! Longer mileage OCIs would extend the time to supply exhaustion by the multiple of miles over 3,000 miles. On the other hand, even if MRags00Max is an inveterate "tourer" and putting 3,000 miles/month on his vehicle, that's still in excess of 4 1/2 years of oil on hand. The only situation I can conceive of that would justify a purchase of that quantity of motor oil is if a fleet of vehicles is involved. Otherwise MRags00Max will be nursing an obsolete formula (good though it may be suspected of being currently) while the rest of us are singing the praises of "SN/GL-5" or perhaps even "SO/GL-6" . . . I'm all for great deals on a great product, but when that product is subject to periodic reformulation to higher performance standards at the urging of the auto manufacturers, exercising a little sanity in long range planning is a great thing, too.
While you certainly won't harm your engine(s) with your stash, nor am I one of those worry warts who believe motor oil goes bad in the bottle after "x" years, I just don't see the logic to unnecessarily tie one's self down to previous technology - perhaps eventually 2 or 3 generations behind, at that, depending on how often you change oil. The fellow who laid claim to 23 cases of TropArtic synthetic-blend has 69gallons of motor oil on hand. Unless he has at least a small fleet to service, laying in that amount borders on committable obsessive-compulsive disorder. (But, hey, this is BITOG - silly me, I sometimes forget . . .)
Hi my name is Mike and I have 15 cases of T/A on hand for personal and occasional customer use. 10 cases or so left in all of the Tidewater Dollar trees. Probably going to buy those up this weekend.
The wife and I drive almost 3k a month, so thats 2 changes a month, 11 quarts. In a little over a year I would run through my stock. Anyhow, glad I found BITOG, lots of great info. Mike
Boomer58 why are you changin your oil once a month if your driving 3k miles during that time. I bet your oil has at least 2k more life in it. May I suggest switching to M1 EP. This would save you a lot of time and money.
