So here's the situation. Mobil garuntees their conventional oils to 5k. Their synthetic blends to 7500 and their m1 ep to 15k. But what about their regular m1 synthetics such as 0w30 5w30 or 10w30? Like maybe 10k?

thats a good question.

I've been guessing 10K as well. It seems to fit the gap. Although, its probably situation dependant. Also, dependant on the formulation.

I'd put money that forumlas like 5w40 TDT, 0W40, and 10w30 High mileage, would fair close to the EP, where as the standard formulas would be closer to the 10K range.

I have done 10,000 mile OCIs for 32 years with various 30wt M1 oils. At preasant I am using the EP oils, still at 10,000 mile OCIs as my routine has been.

A guy I used to work with and still see once in a while has a 99 Silverado and does 15-20,000 mile OCIs on M1 5-30. 260,000 miles on the clock. That's longer than I would go but that's his choice. Engine still runs fine, but lots of other things wroung with the truck.

In most cases, M1 is good for 10k OCIs except for in engines with known problems such as fuel dilution etc.

10k is doable, but it is application specific. A poor running or thrashed car may not respond well to short OCIs on any oil with proper wear results.

But 10k is certainly doable on M1, Ive run up to 15k on the normal M1. Actually, I do not nee a real reason for the EP...

With any oil not either OEM designated for extended drains ..or the oil itself being designated for extended drains outside of any OEM recommendation ..then it's a YMMV situation.

First you have to be doing the mileage in some sensible time frame. The "can I do 10k on M1" is too void of the circumstances that may make it doable or unwise.

10k over 6 months? Hard to imagine it not working. 10k over one year as a daily driver? Probably. 8k over one year? ..then doubt comes into the equation.

Most people who aren't going to manage one year are better off with a 6 month OCI. Then it's just a choice of dino or synth if the mileage is higher or lower.

M1 0W40 was/is recommended by MB in most of its engines, it was in my 00 E430 with FSS and routinely it was in service for 12-13k miles without any problems, and someone in MB forums reported more than 15k miles OCI's with FSS (Flexible Service System).

Regular M1 can safely be used in non-sludge engines 10k miles or 1 year, PP and Synpower and other synthetics can too.

What did the FSS indicate when you dumped it? ..and what was the time line? ..and what was your annual mileage.

If you recall long ago they touted Mobil 1 (regular) to be able to go I believe it was 25K and got into some trouble about this ability. Besides that it was only M1 then as their was no competition from any other brand. If believe their frist grade was 10w30 and that was back around 89' as it was hard as heck to find.

Perosnally I would also never do/push any OCI's on my car/truck. I admit I go according to my OLM from my newly bought Impala SS and what my mileage odometer say off my 01' Durango V-8.

The first offering of M1 was 5w-20. After some issues the 20 weight went away and the 5w30 and up to 15w-50 came out. Then after Katrina they started diversifying and differentiating their oils to the EP and whatnot.

What did the FSS indicate when you dumped it?

200-500 miles before it went to zero and one time it went to -300 miles (300 miles passed zero). The FSS starts at 10k miles when reset after oil change, and it counts down to zero is when you should change oil and filter.

What was the time line?

About 11-13 months

What was your annual mileage?

About 10-13k miles

When I was new here at BITOG (about 3 years ago) , I asked this very same question. I ran M1 for 10K OCI's for years, no problems.

been doing 8 yrs 10-12k on M1 15w50 on wifes Caravan. (one year I was a big slacker and went 15K) Recent valve cover removal showed things are spotless. Haven't used the EP yet.
