I guess it was disscused before but...does amount of mileage differ between different oil filters? say I buy cheap ones like aap filter or supertech, or medium priced ones like puralator premium plus or napa gold? Does it usually say anywhere on the filter how many miles it can take? My cars are 02 Civic and 06 Elantra. Thanks.

any specific filter reccomendations for my cars? maybe any characteristic(flow vs restriction)advise, BTW?

All filters have a rated holding capacity. Some may be higher than others ..but I think that they're probably all able to handle your contaminant production ...with qualification. It would depend on how you accumulate your mileage. The longer the mileage ..the less contaminant per mile. So, and this is an experienced opinion, I think that you're good into the 10k-15k range before your filter is saturated ..assuming that it doesn't take too long for that 10k-15k to expire.

The quality level of filtration is down to personal preference. I prefer the upscale offerings like PureOne. If you're a higher annual mileage type, then something like the EaO from Amsoil may fit your needs as would M1.

Most any filter, as Bill in Utah will point out, will carry you to well beyond most ownership profiles. This works if you look at it in a cost:practical benefit comparison. It could very well add up in as much a passive sense as vitamin therapy does to your life span. Not much in real extended longevity ..but the condition at the end of the ownership cycle may vary a bit.

I use cheaper filters (mainly) on engines that were purchased used ..already at advanced mileage ...or those that do so little service that the short duty cycle assesses more wear then a filter can possibly compensate for.

Does it matter what filter to use if I put synthetic oil in or Any filter would be ok? Last time I used M1 oil so I went ahead and got M1 filter too. don't know why lol! but M1 filter is expensive for me so I'm wondering if I can get away with something cheap like super tech filter?

Thanks to all for your answers!

It depends. What do you want out of it?? What are your expectations/goals?

One user may use synthetic oil ONLY for a severe cold climate ..and change it and the filter out at a relatively short interval. Here there's no harm in using a high end filter ..but you don't get as much value out of it. The value to the synthetic oil usage is in terms of its cold flow benefit alone. So, in this case, what's the sense of spending another $3-$8 for a high end filter

OTOH, if you're someone who does longer drains you can get the utility out of a higher end filter.

Even if you don't extend the drains, but are racking up the mileage at a decent clip, you can get the $$/use ratio into favorable range by doing the filter every other OCI.

There's a few dimensions to wear that work out to comparables between time vs. mileage. Some engine that sees about 4k a year of daily driving may be in the exact same shape as one that does 20k a year at any year of service. The short mile engine has 5X the average wear ..but does 1/5 the average mileage. One wears from use. One wears from lack of it

If you can adapt/massage that basic view a bit, you can see some sensible/false economies depending on your situation.

I look at the whole package; past maintenance history, change interval, oil type, costs, and vehicle/owner considerations.

'02 Civic...I believe they have long drain intervals (like 10K), they are likely a relatively 'clean' run but also have a small filter. If you have changed oil religiously it might not be too bad and you could leave filter change to match oil change. (I don't change filters mid-stream due to mess.)

If you plan on keeping it for awhile I would lean toward filters with synth blended materials (media) which may hold up longer. I'd follow mfg recommended and get a bias from other Civic owners with high mileage results.

06 Elantra may be whole different story...

I'm going to do a UOA on a Wix with approximately 15000 miles on it. I changed the oil once at about 8000, and will change it (hopefully) tomorrow and send off the UOA. Look for it in a couple of weeks if you're interested.

If you want to put really high mileage on your filters I would look for silicone rubber anti-drainback valves instead of the more common black nitrile rubber. The nitrile can get hardened with extended use and may not do it's job as well in the long haul.

Cut open the Wix 51365 after leaving it on last oil change, putting 15,000 total miles on it. Looks very, very clean. Sending off for a UOA. Man, this is a SMALL filter...but, I bet it did the job just fine. Antidrainback function working well, as I drained all I could for 8 hours, then cut it open...still a bunch of oil held in by the ADBV. No gunk anywhere in the filter or can. Filter medium looks good. We'll see in about a week what the UOA says....
