I wouldn't buy an emissions diesel. Just way too complicated and way to expensive when that stuff gets messed up. The dpf will wear out that's around $3000.00 the egr system will wear out also and if that happens it can result in complete failure of the engine due to coolant hydrolocking it if the egr cooler fails. The egr system requires periodic cleaning also which is pretty expensive to have done.

I disagree totally.

Motor Trend, Car and Driver, Automobile, all of the rags give this car a HUGE

I would not hesitate AT ALL buying this car. Only "extra" service (which is free for 3 yrs) is to ad the "AD BLU" additive. The Passat holds around 4 gallons which lasts about 15k miles. It can be bought at a local auto parts store for $15 for 2.5 gallons. So its not a deal breaker. I passed on the Passat and GOLF Diesel to get my GTI and I regret it. I should have bought the TDI Golf. For me, it is just right. The Passat is a big car for me.

All car magazine people love it. A deal breaker for me is the DSG automatic transmission. $440 maintenance every 40,000 miles and yes, I realize you may do it yourself with proper equipment.

I agree. Def doesn't scare me, and I'd buy one with mt, so the dct liability doesn't scare me (plus drove one, hated it).

I'd buy one in an instant. I'll bet that the $3000 PDF is like the $7500 hybrid battery that ends up lasting 150k+ and costs 1/3 of the claims.

I had the same question. I typically buy Japanese because I drive 30,000 miles a year and like to keep a car for about 250,000. I would love to get a TDI Passat but worried what a new air conditioner, or ABS system, or fuel injector would cost.
Would one of those items offset all my fuel savings? I never had something like that go out on my Honda or Toyota.
Has anyone had a TDI for 200,000 or more and not have multiple repairs over $1,000 or $2,000, or $3,000?

You would probably have to look outside North America where TDI's have been popular (or even dominating the market for about 20 years.
Many owners I have spoken to don't see an issue. Unless they drive very low miles, in which case the extra purchase cost is not justified.

Your Price is HIGH at the local VW here its $260 for the dsg service. so$260 every 40k? That's cheap!!

My Sonata I used to have costs $360 every 60k but nobody is complaining about that. The DSG is a very good transmission and its bullet proof. Don't let that service scare you.

does the DSG 6speed have a dipstick and drain plug? The DSG should a more expensive transmission than traditional automatic.

A coworker had a 2000 tdi with 380K. Was going to change the timing belt for the third time but one of the cylinders lost compression. Non tdi's can push 200k with ease.

How multiple? I have done struts twice (second time was under lifetime warranty, so all I paid was labor and that was $200 thankfully), wheel bearings, some egr work, clutch and turbo. I added it up one time and I think it was $6k for all the repairs inside of this 284k. Basically the same cost as a 30mpg gasser but with a much nicer drive.

But that is an older tdi, the newer ones are a different game.

No dipstick but does have a drain plug. The DSG IMO is one of the best transmissions on the market. It has all the pros of a standard and an auto. it has no torque converter to rob power to the wheels and shifts faster than Michael Schumacher!!! They are extremely reliable and though they are not perfect it's really an amazing transmission. Love mine.

Did a quick price check and DSG service mostly on HIGH price side, see attached link and hit last page for 2013. http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?s=bc8169d71c59cd90d2e6edcc188677b5&t=326140&page=5

The transmission might be bulletproof if the owner keeps up with required DSG maint but if he doesn't? It would scare me from buying a used vehicle with DSG AT.

On my Toyota vehicles with auto, DIY, drain AT fluid 3 qts. add Toyota OEM fluid, 3 qts at $6 a qt. and I do it yearly. With the Toyota SUV no need to even jack up the vehicle.

which suv is it? does its transmission have drain plug & dipstick?

Pretty sure Toyota WS goes for more like $9/qt and requires you to get the transmission temp to the proper temp; also no dipstick.

I forget, is the DSG still using a DMF? IIRC the early ones had bad DMF's, just like my car did.

2004 Toyota RAV4 ATF fluid Type T-IV and 2001 Toyota Avalon ATF fluid Dexron III both have dipstick and drain plugs and YES they are older vehicles, not sure about the newer?

My aunt has a 2004 Beetle TDI 1.9, 151k miles. It has had a high pressure hose for the AC replaced, alternator and starter replaced the entire times all besides regular maintenance. Very reliable.
