thinking of getting a new craftsman 21hp 46in cut, hydro transmission for $1,400.

Any input?

BTW, it has a B&S engine

Yes, go ahead and get a Cub Cadet with the Kohler 20 horsepower engine, for about the same price, it will last so much longer.

I have 2 neighbors up the block, one guy bought a John Deere tractor back in 1993 and the other guy is on his 3rd Craftsman tractor.

The guy who spent $3800.00 for the John Deere who has a Kawasaki engine has had no problems and spent less money in the long run, the other guy spent about $1500.00 each time, so 3 mowers and that is $4500.00

My last Craftsman only lasted 21 years, bought another and going strong to this day 300hrs so far, pull the trigger there good units..

My Craftsman mower just gave up the ghost after 16 years. Most of that was mowing 3 acres and had no problems. On my second one and have no reason to think it will not go as long as the other one.

Both have/had B&S engines.

I already hsve one craftsman, and it's on it's 6th year, no problems, but I just wanted to see if there were any issues/warnings about the new ones.

A Sears lawn tractor is just as good as any other machine in this price range. I do prefer the decks and cut quality of the low-end Cubs and Deeres over a Sears, but overall, the

Generally poor mowing, with shallow, thin decks, few anti scalp wheels, weak components. Granted, the cheap Deere's have some of these problems, but dealer support is 100 times better, and they still have numerous advantages. Why not find a used higher line John Deere, they will still last forever and their prices do go down after 10-20 years.

Head down to your local shop and look at the commercial grade Toro, Snappers, Deere, or Exmark units.

Or you can even check craigslist for used commercial units. I have also seen some used commercial deck mowers at the local small engine repair shop. You might be able to strike a deal.

I have seen that unit you are talking about, I think Craftsman is trying to get into the commercial area.

Not for the $1400 the OP is talking about. Sears does sell some fabricated steel deck walk-behind jobs. Nothing in the rider realm though.

Is a 12 gauge deck thin? That's what my Craftsman has.

May not be worth a [censored] but it's old as [censored] and mows my multi-acre lawn weekly during the season without repairs.

I'd have to consider another.

Agreed, with the exception that (IMO) JD charges around a $200 premium over the competition, just for the green and yellow paint. Other that that, my JD LA110 is the same quality level as the Craftsman, Toro, Cub Cadet, etc. in it's price range ($1700). With that said, I've had zero problems from my JD, well into it's 3rd mowing season.

Sears/Craftsman mowers were originally manufactured by American Yard Products (AYP). AYP sold to Electrolux not that many years back, then Electrolux sold to Husqvarna. Currently it's Husqvarna Outdoor Products Inc. with plants in Charlotte NC and Augusta GA, among others: http://corporate.husqvarna.com/?p=contact&afw_lang=en

then why not buy one of their brands rather than a rebadged craftsman one?

A Sears unit will be less expensive. Higher priced Husqvarna does have a dedicated dealer network, but Sears parts can be ordered through a Sears store, online or through tons of lawn mower shops. Essentially they are the same machine with different options, colors and cosmetics.
