How can I tell what the micron rating is for a fuel filter?

I'm looking to buy fuel filters based on their micron filtering size for a aux fuel tank.

For example, in this pic located here: aux fuel tank filter , I'd like to know the micron filtering level of what appears to be a Fram G3902A fuel filter.

I tried the Donaldson site, no luck.

All help appreciated.

Thanks,

Al

Wavin,

That made my head hurt!!! If filter manufacturers won't give out micron ratings, I sure haven't many of them give out "Beta ratio information"!!

Basically, the Ford SD 6.0l diesel engine comes with a stock fuel filter rated, I think, at 5 microns. My goal is to provide some pre-filtering to A) ensure fuel contaminants don't make it to the engine and B) prolong the efficiency and useful life of the stock filter. Hence, the addition of pre-filter on the output of the aux tank.

BTW, it was supposed to be "G3802A", the "9" was a typo, sorry.

I thought Donaldson rated some of their filters with a micron rating. Or was that some other filter manufacturer?

Thanks,

Al

Looks like that filter might actually be a G3802A, which crosses over to a NAPA(WIX) 3097. Their catalog also does not list micron ratings. Give them a call at 800-949-6698 or e-mail them.

The Wix diesel fuel filters that I'm using on my oil burner (will be - just got them) are also rated at 10um ..so I think that this is some "standard" level of fuel filtration.

I took the NAPA # and punched it into WIX. I got nothing initially since you had the number wrong in the initial post. The rest is playing off of that in the rest of the x-ref engines. Sometimes, with oil filters anyway you can get alternatives in sizes.

Yep, I did a little digging last night after I posted my question and found the Wix site. Spent a couple hours finding the filter I wanted, which is Wix 33281/Don P551605/Napa FIL 3281, which is perfect for my application. 10 micron screening, 3/4-16 thread, gasket OD = 2.8", ID = 2.4".

Thanks for the help: there is no way I would found what I needed using the normal auto parts web sites!

Thanks,

Al

Those are the filters going on my oil burner. I'm putting a dual mount Permacool before the regular oil burner filter. I don't know how long they will last ..but I go through about 700-800 gallons a year ..so I think that they should last at least 2

I had a lot of goo in the regular filter.

Al, I had trouble too trying to figure out the micron rating on fuel filters. I finally bought but haven't yet installed a CM filters (Canton Racing) marine fuel/water separator (pretty slick looking) with a 1 micron element. They didn't say how efficient it is at 1 micron though. It found it here.

I tried Perma Cool fuel/water separators in the past and I was not happy. Said I think 2 micron and good for fuel injection, but the first Perma Cool element I tried leaked from the drain cock, and then on the second one the drain cock turn handle just broke off when I was closing it, and the third leaked from the drain cock. I finally put JB Weld around the drain cock fitting to get it to quit leaking.

"Dual mount Permacool" Well, well well, isn't it a small world: That's exactly my application also. I have a dual remote oil filter setup on my '98 Dodge that I'm getting ready to sell and my plan was the use the dual remote mount as a filter between my 90 gallon transfer tank and the main stock tank.

The stock PSD 6.0 fuel filters are 10 micron and 4 micron, respectively, per the 6.0 Bible. A 10 micron pre-filter, then, is perfect. I plan to have almost 100% of my fuel go through the transfer tank prior to hitting the main tank, therefore through the prefilters.

Porcupine, according to the Donaldson site, I could find no fuel/water separators that would fit the Fram PH8A interface of the Permacool dual remote mount (i.e. 3/4"-16 thread, 2.8" OD and 2.4" ID gasket). Given your experience, I'm now glad. I'll just use the 33281 and drive on.

Thanks again for the help!

Al

Albin, I couldn't find any fuel filters for 3/4"-16 either. The spin on Canton Racing marine fuel/water separators I bought I got in 1"-12, the only remote filter mount I could find in that size was from PermaCool, so I ordered a couple through Summit Racing, but they were special order and took a couple weeks to arrive.

Well, this has been a productive thread ..albeit in a round about way

Those are the filters that Big O Dave pulled out of the WIX master catalog for me.
