House Numbers on (Rural) Mail Box

My current employer that provides 911 emergency dispatch countywide (Cities and County) does not dispatch on GPS. Addressing is based on a grid type of system, so the address pretty much dials you in to where you need to go.

Rural areas of the County are mandated to post a high visibility address marker at the driveway intersection with the public road. First one is free, replacements for damage/theft/etc are at cost (no markup). The uniform signage is a major assistance to emergency services in the rural parts of the County.

The basic message is that post your address clearly.

That doesn't mean people actually follow those regulations. Most cities/counties/townships have laws/ordinances in places that require addresses to be conspicuously posted. In my years as a pizza delivery driver, driver for a major package delivery service, and now a driver for a local courier/trucking company, I can tell you that many homes and businesses do not have any address posted whatsoever even though they're required to do so.

What's ugly about it? It's just a small sign with reflective numbers on it? Are you truly that shallow that you think an address marker is ugly?

People, people, lets stay focused.
Yes, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

My main point was that for $20.00 (or less) I could sleep a lot better knowing that the Police / Ambulance could (hopefully) find their house in an emergency.

And I will add that these Senior Citizens were extremely pleased in what I did.

That is an ugly mailbox and post too, so the sign is no matter IMHO. Reality is though at least in most rural area the sign is smaller since #'s rarely exceed two digits as homes are sparse and road runs out.

The reason they put #'s like that is because folks who own or typically rent "mountain" houses give the local response departments fits because they cannot describe for the life of them where place is panicked in emergency. Both sides of family own 2nd homes near ski area's and this is common complaint. GPS is not entirely accurate with rural areas either and updates/corrections for personal are slow/non-existant if they have one in the first place.

We aren't even that remote, but we've had 3-4 people coming to buy goats and didn't listen to our directions, that have driven all around the countryside following what the GPS tells them to do... Finally they call and either we give directions from where they are, or I go get them. Heck an elderly lady drove into the river nearby following her GPS...
Emergency response people aren't that clueless, but its easy to miss an unreflective sign in the dark if they are in a bit of a hurry.

Additionally, if one had to call the cops for a rolling issue, eg, drunk driver, they could say they were on state route 420 southbound, passing house #2229.

Plus things aren't screwed up by having one digit fall off a mailbox, you know those signs are official and they hold together.

My green sign has both the house number and the road number. So its pretty long. Most in the county are like this but it is easy to find your way around.

Ex. 1111 N 2100 East Rd.

The county is laid out in classic Jeffersonian 1 mile grids. Only around the rivers or other natural obstructions do the road numbers become 4 different digits.

New England is not a grid nor organized and my guess is ski vacation home is there. Glad there is ryhme and reason to other parts of country

On GPS my home address does not exist except Google Maps. My town address switched towns as my mailbox/tiny frontage/street is in a different town. They swapped my mailing address to the town I live in now.

Living in an outer suburb, most of the houses in developed subdivisions are easily located using GPS. The places that have been here for more than 60 years are hit or miss. And a lot of houses in the more rural town a few minutes away that I used to live in need local knowledge to find. GPS might end up going down the wrong road or an easement passable only by tractors or 4x4's.

OP, good job helping your family get found more easily. Here's hoping that first responders don't have to test your new additions anytime soon!

I kinda like it. Very obvious. And if "everyone" has the same setup then it is easy to filter out and not notice. Better than faded number or non existant ones.

Bugs me to no end when I drive down a city street looking for 221 whatever only to find no one has markings at all. Cannot tell if I am getting close, closer or going the wrong way.

Sounds good. Funny how so many create drama over an opinion. IMO being found through sufficient property labeling is a self-responsibility issue, not another nanny state force gawdy green signs everywhere.

...which when they implemented them, went from double digit numbers that were quite logical based upon lot locations on the street, to four digit numbers which are based upon who knows what...

Nobody is against being seen. Im just not a fan of those green signs. You did the right thing for the people.

White on green is a lot easier to see, especially at night. One of counties adjacent to me use to have white on red for the fire protection numbers. Very hard to see for me anyway.
