My high pressure power steering hose started leaking last week. Honda wanted $220 for a new one, so I looked online at this site:

Store link of part

Results:
Nichirin $132
Edelmann $72
Beck Arnley $55

I guess I am a little curious about why there is so much discrepancy between the prices, and why the hoses look so different from each other in the photos. Should I just go with the BA? Does anyone know if this is a simple R&R job with some wrenches, or are there some gotchas?

Looks to be a good site - I checked some stuff for my Audi there before, and they have overall good prices. With respect to your application, I don't know a lot about it. However, it would appear that some hoses are much longer than others on that page, and the more expensive ones are the correct length and have the fittings. The cheap ones explicitly say they lack fittings.

If it were me, I'd go for the ones that are the proper length and have the fittings. They obviously cost more, but will save you a lot of hassle.

As an aside, I wish I could get Pentosin coolant up in Canada for what you pay down there.

I think you're looking at the low pressure hoses. Only the 3 expensive ones are the high pressure hoses. which is what I need.

Okay, I guess I didn't look carefully enough. To be honest, I don't think there's a lot of difference, and cheaper isn't always worse. I noticed on that site, for my oil filters, Bosch is cheaper than Fram.

If you are intent on saving money, check a few other parts sites. If it's anything like Canada, multiple parts sites access the exact same warehouses, but charge vastly different prices. I'll PM you.

I checked Rockauto. They were cheaper. The BA was $52 and the Edelmann was $55.

Edelmann is $59 and Beck Arnley is $50 at Amazon.com with free super saver shipping. They don't have Nichirin. Both sites have the same part numbers for the two. When comparing price you should compare the total after shipping and tax if applicable.

The pictures on Amazon.com is much different with Carpartswholesale.com. Both sites have the same part numbers for the two. So either one is likely to fit your Civic.

Return to Amazon.com is very easy and they pay return shipping if the part does not fit. For this reason I would buy from Amazon.

I am not a big fan but if you have a Car Quest in your area, they may make you a hose cheaper than you can find it somewhere else. The CQ in my area makes high pressure hoses,if one is in your area, they may do the same.

You may also be able to get one at a farm supply/repair business.

Another option is to have a hose made by a local outfit. They can often reuse the ends on the old hose, or have new fittings.
Places that specialize in hydraulic lines.
If there is a joint nearby, look into it.

Got the hose. Question. When installing this bad boy, would it be recommended to wrap the threads with teflon tape, or not?

I had the high pressure power steering hose installed in '94 LS400 a couple years ago, my mechanic used teflon tape. It may not help in preventing the leak at the connection but it doesn't hurt either.

It wont seal any better but may make removal later easier. If you have some around why not,if not i wouldn't make a special trip to get some.

Side note,
In my experience, Beck/Arnley has been rebadged Japanese stuff, and always of the absolute highest caliber. Right up there with OE.
Edelmann makes a good power steering hose as well. I have one in my car. Fitment was perfect.

Now that the hose itself is out of the way, does anybody else keep reading the thread title as "Horse Question?"

I have a similar post under the Mechanical/Maintenance Forum section here at BITOG. Looking for an 01 Lexus RX-300 high pressure P/S hose and can't find it. I have asked others here for help in locating the high pressure P/S hose and none can find it either. I just checked the link that Cogito has provided and it too shows nothing available. Still looking!

Char, besides carpartswhsl, check rockauto and amazon. All of those places had my hose, and my car is 21 years old. I am surprised you can't find one for an '01.

My manual says to use a flare nut wrench on one of the hose fittings. I don't have one. Would an open end wrench mess it up, or what? I've seen people use vice grips on those things. I don't want to mess it up since it is rather expensive.
