I am going to be replacing the timing belt on my Honda Civic 1.6L and am wondering if anyone has any experience with any or these brands of belts...
-Gates
-Dayco
-Goodyear

Any brands to stay away from...?
How about the tensioner...or is it just better to go with OEM parts in this case?

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks

Stick with OEM parts. I bought a "OEM spec" kit and totally regretted the decision. Had a major fitting issue with the water pump.

OK, I can see from your previous posts that you own a '97 Civic.

Here's a kit from a Honda dealer:

The kit includes a Genuine Honda timing belt, water pump, and timing belt tensioner.

You can purchase the A/C, Alternator, and P/S Belts locally from your parts store, or from another online source (or see if the seller would be willing to include them at a reasonable cost). If you decide to go with aftermarket drive belts, the Goodyear Gatorback has served me well.

I would also highly recommend replacing any accessible engine seals while doing the timing belt job and performing a valve adjustment.

Critic,
Sorry about no year: 97 Civic del sol S (1.6L non-VTEC)

Thanks for the link...looks like a good price for OEM parts.

I am planning on doing the valve adjustment while I am in there, its got a tick on cold start (when ambient is below 30 F) and I don't think the valves have been adjusted since the 30K adjustment. (it is now at 197k miles)

Get a factory service manual from Helms. Check some forums for TSBs, service manuals updates, etc. that are applicable.

Honda engines that are built in NA mostly resort to using Gates as OE belt. This is the case on my dad's 7th gen Civic (that darrn1.7L 4).

Yes, while Japanese OE belts are better as replacement, do not discount any good NA brands esp. Gates.
