Honda Oversize Filter

Changed the oil on 2005 CR-V for first time.
Replaced OEM filter with a Wix #51344.
This filter is much larger than the OEM unit but fits into the available space without any interference issues.
The thread/gasket/bypass specs are correct for this application.
Wix filter has approximately twice the filter media of the OEM filter. It is expensive though at around 8 US$.
It takes about 1/3 of a quart more oil (4.75 qts total) to bring the oil up to the full mark on the dipstick with the larger filter.

good choice. i stepped up to a 51344 for my GFs '96 civic, and it also is a larger size for my 93 mazda. i bought 6 @ $4.89 from rockauto.com when i had to buy a bunch of car parts.

i like this size, as it isn't too huge, but is large enough to offer more media and slightly more oil capacity.

if you want to stock up on WIX filters, check out filter1.com and fleetfilter.com ($3.16ea when you buy 12! - can't beat that price)

Thanks for the tip.
But I checked out FleetFilter and they want $3.84 each for 51344 and $2.00 each for shipping bringing the price up to almost six bucks each.
I tried RockAuto a few month ago and they actually wanted MORE per filter than I'm paying locally when you factored in the shipping.
Ya gotta watch those shipping charges.

Wix filters are just expensive, no matter what.

Honda changed all their filters for their cars and suv, vans to the new "thimble" sized ones.

Hondas have some very long OCI's for their new cars. I think the the new CRV's are 20k or one year, for "normal (not severe) driving" and that is on their dino 5-20 oil and the small filter.

An 03 Ody I have now sports the smaller filter and 10-30 M1 and hasn't run better. It had a larger one on it b4, has 24k miles.

The 05 CRV is on Honda dino until 15k, then I'll be switching to M1. First oil change at 7k. It's driven 85% freeway with mostly 70+ one way drives.

I think the Honda oil filters are good (the small ones)

There's probably less crap for a filter to catch than there was before. What other logic could there be?

I'd like to use a larger Amsoil SDF filter on my 2005 Acura MDX. is there one available. (OK, its really my wife's car).

I AM fan of oversize filters, but if a car is in warranty, there may be a caveat.....

IF there were a problem, conceivably, WIX could say you didn't use the recommended filter.....

May be true for newer K series engine, but for older B and D series engine you are now forced to run smaller filter unless you shell out for the larger and more expensive S2000 filter.

I wanted to jump the boat and start using other filter that is easy to find and have the same geometry so I can use the cap wrench. Any suggestion?

If not buying a new wrench is also an option.

I understand the warranty issue and thats why I use 5W20 oil and change it close to the 3700 miles. But I do use Amsoil oil and filters.
