I changed the oil on my 03 Civic today and when I tightened the new Honda filter it seems the filter bottomed out on the block after about 3/4 to 1 turn. The new filter seems to have the seal about the same depth as the factory filter. It isn't leaking but I don't want to be going down the road and lose all my oil...especially when I have a tee time

Is this anything to worry about.

PS...this will be my last Honda filter. I noticed it was a Fram after I got home from the dealership.

Slickracer, when you go to the dealer specify the Honda filter made by Filtech. What brand was the factory filter? The factory filter that came off of my sister's 03 Civic Ex was made by Fram. -Joe

Even if made by Fram, would it not be made to Honda specifications? If so, I would think it should be better than the brand labeled Fram filters. Are Filtech's that much better? Of course, now I have to check the 3 Honda filters I have stored because the dealer is always selling 4 for the price of 3.

You can also buy the filtechs online at several different places. The ones I buy from H and A
are filtech's, but I also notice when I am tightening the filter on the block it also seems to suddenly bottm out after 3/4 of a turn, I think this is a gasket design and has nothing to do with Filtech or Fram since they both have the same design.

Slick;
Same thing happened to me recently using a Honda filter that I got from the dealership (using on a friend's Accord). Clearly something wrong with the filter case touching the mounting surface that early. I unscrewed it and ran to NAPA - I like the looks of the gasket on the Wix/Napa filters.

Not sure why anyone would get a "genuine Honda" filter when good filters can be had for equal or less money at stores you look forward to visiting. Just my 0.02...I'm sure "OEM only" fanatics would disagree.

Matt

I'm going to start using NAPA gold filters. They are about the same price as the OEM and I get to support the little guy.

Matt I am not an OEM fanatic, but I buy the OEM Honda made by filtech because I have had good UOA numbers using it, I have never had a known failure, and it is built well compared to other filters that I have cut open and compared it with. I get them for $4 at the dealer, not expensive by any means. -Joe

Sounds good, then. You've at least put some thought into it, unlike the Pavlovian "Gotta have OEM" response that keeps the dealership window humming along, overcharging on parts!

Can someone with access to the Filtech filters cut one open and measure the filter area?

Where can I buy them online?

Satterfi, Disregard the last message I hit the wrong key too early. Anyway you can buy them at several places including this place http://www.handa-accessories.com/ which is where I get mine, just make sure you get the right part # Honda (USA) 15400-P0H-305 and this will be the filtech. Also check out this site, http://www.ntpog.org/reviews/filters/filters.shtml I am not sure what to make of it the Author thinks the fuzzy media is bad what do you think?

khager,

I'm looking for the filters that fit the '03 Civic which are different, ie smaller gasket size, than the one you have.

I'll order one from the site you gave and cut it open.

Edit: I just looked at the handa site. They say the larger filter will fit in the applications that came with the small filter. Good news. Maybe I can squeeze an M1-105 in the 03 Civic.

Satterfi, Mine is an 02 Accord so it came with the larger filter. The M1's are out of my price range, I can't see spending that much when I change it every 3K anyway.

I believe the correct turns after first contact is 3/4 for a Honda OEM filter. If you look at the gasket, it is round on the surface and has a special mould shape and compresses easier than a flat one on most aftermarket ones.

Of course, the ideal method to tighten the filter is with a torque wrench. I'm afraid you'll have to check the manual for that.
