I know honda recommends changing the oil filter with every OTHER oil change...How do you guys feel about it?

On my TL I change the filter with each oil change.....now the MDX is a lease so i may try the every other thing...

That would be 14K miles on the filter!!

I do it my Hondas. Most modern engines don't produce that much crud and filters are getting smaller. The oil change without the filter is so quick and easy. Sometimes if I'm not using the same oil, I will remove it and drain it. Some say the o ring is made for one trip only, but I haven't had an issue. One time of the filter falling off would cure me of it though.

That would drive me crazy changing out the oil filter every other oil change! Personaly I'd change the filter every oil change, does Honda give a reason behind the ever other OC filter change?

Hi,
PhoenixTL - Following Honda's recommendation is wise. Their filters are designed for their purposes and will be accordingly durable

I have studied (cut open) many OEM filters at recommended OCIs and at times many kms beyond that. I have only seen one fully clogged up. This was in Japanese import into NZ - that car a VW had never had an OC from new - at 80KKms IIRC

Call me crazy. But I follow the 20K oil filter change interval (exactly 1 year) for my Civic. I do 10K miles on Syn, then two 5K miles on dino. I wish I had a good cutter to open this filter up and post pictures without getting the element full of metal particles/shavings.

On my dad's 2005 Honda I left a Mobil 1 M-104 filter for 2 years with multiple oil changes.

I have been changing the filter every 10K (either a Audi OEM for the Audi and a Mobil 1 filter or lately the Fram Xtended Guard for the Lexus) and the oil every 5K on our cars. No issues.

I really think it depends on other factors as opposed to just "how clogged it will get" first you really can't tell by looking at a filter canister if the inside construction is flawed ie. what if you got a bad filter? It is rare but not unfathomable. Second if you have a coolant leak that is going unnoticed that can severely damage your filter. Also it depends on where you live, if I lived in the desert I would be more prone to changing my filter at longer intervals because of the dry weather. I live in an area of high humidity and water can warp cellulose media. So with all of those negatives I change at every interval unless using a synthetic media filter Amsoil, RP, or the most easily accessable Fram Xtended Guard (probably the best filter on the market for the money.) Just food for thought.

a worn engine with excessive blow-by the piston rings can clog a filter in short order. In that case replace the filter at each drain.

There's something about pouring 4 1/2 qts. of new oil into an engine with 1/2 qt. of old oil that doesn't settle with me very well.

started skipping filter changes for the past 30K miles on my cars:
10 sequoia, 10 venza (forget the 1 hr waits for the "free" oil changes), 08 rx350 and 05 G35. I just put in the full amount of oil required with the filter change. The extra oil imho hasn't hurt anything in any of my cars. dino oil, I go 5-6 OCIs and synthetic I go 7-9K OCIs. so for the RX, the filter is on for around 15-18K. It's a cartridge filter and it doesn't look bad at all. Nice having 7 minute oil changes.

Hi,
Steve S - You said:
"If I took off the used filter, I would put a new one on"

So would I and this would be to ensure that a "pure" and tight seal was secured!

I did the "every other OCI" filter change on my Civic for a while, interspersed with an occasional filter change in between if I was changing oil brands. For the last 20k or so though I've settled on just replacing the filter every OCI. Part of it is that I've been changing oil brands looking for something that won't burn as much and part of it it just irrational nervousness about following the recommendation.

It if keeps burning oil maybe I might as well go back to OEM filters every other oil change...

There's also something about pouring $25 worth of oil in my engine while working to save $1.75 by extending the filter to another change. Wouldn't you be able to logically conclude that you could recoup the extra cost of the filter (I paid just over $3 each for Purolator Pureone filters last week) by extending the OCI due to the fact that you got more of the old oil out and new oil in by tossing the filter? If you've got 5 quarts in the engine/filter and don't change the filter (assuming the filter holds 1 cup) then you're left with 5% of the oil that you could have changed. Cost wise it seems about a wash so I'd tend to err on the side of caution and change it.

yea my 88 dodge aries Hayne's Manual says to change the filter every other change, but don't think I'd buy it.

If you gotta get under the car to pull the plug, may as well change the filter too....

Then you gotta figure, what if you forget track of time....? Especially for those running extended (annual/10k) OCIs? Forgetting if you replaced the filter last OCI or not :P

Sure, I guess that's really a worst case scenario, and could be solved by dating the filter or something....but you get my drift

Anyway...

Some engines that need 5k changes, but "require" 10k, such as turbos like the VAG 1.8t and 2.0t, are WELL SERVED by draining the oil at 5k and refilling with fresh oil REGARDLESS of the filter exchange.

If this approach means the difference between an owner only doing mfg suggested 10k or doing easy 5k oil changes and re-using the filter at a cost of $25, what do you think the answer is?

Remember, a dealer oil change is $100-ish, so a big group of people are not going to spend and extra for hundred dollars on something "esoteric" like oil changes.

I only change every other 5,000 mile oil change. Waste of fine $ otherwise. Your engine won't know the difference between 4 qts fresh, 1/2 quart 5000 mile oil, vs 4.5 qts fresh.
