07 civic filter in 2007 SI. Filter in at 20,000, changed only oil at 27,000 and just now at 32,000. PP 5-w30 both times july 09

This is the 1st time I've done this so let me know if you think it looks normal, good or bad. Thank you

Element looks normal to me. If I was looking to go 12k, I would have chosen a better filter, but that is just my personal preference. I don't think anything looks wrong with your filter. The K-Series engine doesn't introduce much for wear metals or combustion blow-by under normal circumstances.

Filter element looks great for 2 oil changes and 12k miles. From the picture, it can easily understand why Honda recommends filter changed only on second oil change.

Thank you for the comments
Yes, I just put in an M1 and have two Pureone filters.

Anyone who has a current SI knows how tough it is to change the filter. It was Feb in CT and I'm 65 (and weak) so I didn't change the filter the last time.

Cutter is from Summitt racing. The link is in the tool forum. It cost almost $50. I have 3 cars and this site is growing on me - OCD ?? :-)

I have two of those cutters. Great for large filters, but not so great on the small ones that don't hit the two little wheels.

Widman, thanks for saying the cutter doesn't work great with small filters that don't hit both rubber parts at the back because I did have to work with it for a while.

That looks like the Filtech sourced version.

I have a hard time cutting these open with my Summit because of the small diameter and the rolled seam. Great construction tho.

Yes the filter did have FILTECH on it.

+1 on the tool not perfect for this small filter. I tough I was just an other dumb 65 year old who couldn't figure out a simple tool that had been highly recommended.

I've got the same Summit filter cutter. Those "rubber parts" you referred to are actually two small metal wheels ... at least on the cutter I have. Maybe you have a different model cutter?

I made a wooden block with a half moon in it that sits between the backbone (where the two small wheels are mounted) and the cutter wheel so I can cut smaller filters. Took me about 1/2 to make the wooden "adapter".

Maybe they are metal. I haven't paid much attention to that detail after showing a couple of people how to use them, but I like the block of wood idea. got to do that

I made one side of the wood block half moon at about 3" diameter to fit the small filters, and the other side has 2 half moons for the two metal wheels to sit in. That way it's kind of "locked" into place when trapped between the filter and base that has the two small wheels.
