Except that there is no evidence it happens and the manufacturers say there is no downside.

I've been running Defy 5w30 because people said it made their Hyundais/Kias run quieter. Hard to tell from the seat of the pants perspective whether that's true or not. It seems a little quieter than other Xw30s but I haven't exactly taken a decibel reading either. It doesn't consume any oil with Defy but then again it didn't with other 5w30s either.

The engine is approved for 5w20 and 5w30 any temp and 10w30 above 0F. When I've tried 5w20 in the past it seemed to get about 1mpg better on average but it also consumed a quart of 5w20 through a 5000 mile oci. On Xw30 the oil level doesn't budge on a 5K oci.

Maybe I'll try Defy 5w20 next over the wintertime and see if I am able to get a small mileage gains without the consumption.

Then again I've been driving for Lyft and Uber recently so maybe my next oil should be an HDEO 10w30

I see high milage oil as a way to rejuvenate seals BEFORE they start to leak. Give it a try.

well yeah, it's not about evidence, it's about possibility.

I have no idea whether the rubber can shrink back after the exposure to certain chemicals stopped. If it can, then the above scenario doesn't look impossible.

Its a reliable, tough engine. Honestly, it doesn't really matter what you run in it, just change it regularly.

Brother bought Maxlife..hey, he bought a good oil! Use it!

How much?

I have a 2001 hx with 179, uses about 1.5 qrts every 5 or 6 k.. I am thinking of switching to RP hps or a high mileage

Great candidate for M1 HM

Quote:
Provides unsurpassed wear protection for vehicles with more than 75,000 miles*
Mobil 1 High Mileage oils are designed to help extend engine life and prevent engine oil leaks. To help prevent wear in higher mileage engines, this advanced, fully synthetic high mileage oil features:

•Higher base oil viscosity to help reduce leaks and provide better high temperature protection.
•Additional seal conditioners to protect engine seals in all vehicles because over time, rubber seals can harden or shrink, resulting in oil leaks.
•A proprietary blend of high-performance synthetic base oils
If your engine contains excessive sludge deposits due to less-than-adequate maintenance practices, Mobil 1 High Mileage synthetic motor oil can help reduce this sludge. For severe cases of engine sludge, short oil change intervals (3,000-5,000 miles) are recommended for the first two or three oil changes as the sludge reduction takes place. (In cases of engine damage that may have resulted from poor maintenance, even Mobil 1™ motor oil cannot remedy years of neglect.)

HM oil is great for any age car. I've used it in brand new engines. No problems. I've used it in old tired engines. No problems.

100% agree.

Id use it without issue. Pretty soon valvoline synpower will be gone and Maxlife full syn will be all thats left as far as full syn goes from them. Which is fine for use in new cars they say.

I use MaxLife in my old truck and it stopped a small rear main leak.
Using a HM oil won't hurt a thing.I don't know how anyone can think it does.
Do you think an oil company would sell an oil that would hurt an engine?

They're planning on discontinuing Synpower?

Crazy! Wonder why Valvoline is getting out of the synthetic oil scene?

Well, their new packaging seems to indicate more of a swing towards Full Synthetic "with Maxlife technology" being pushed vs eliminating Synthetic. Not that i dont believe someone told you that but I'll believe it when i see it.

Now, eliminating the name SynPower altogether? Yeah, i can see that happening after seeing the new bottles.
