Fujian Tulou (earth structure) from back in 1200 before they were famous for knockoffs.

Apartment complex villages build on top of mountains, strong as a castle with flame resistant iron plated 13cm thick wooden gates, granite gate frame, and cobble wall. Gun ports on the top floor, circular corridors for troops and ammunition movements. It is also immune to cannon fires and bandits resistant.

Sometimes I think about quitting everything and moving to a village in China. There are quite a few very impressive places. Friendly and hospitable neighbors would be a plus.

Give me the good food and the excellent tea and I'll be happy.

That is extremely cool. I would know love to know even more about that portion of China's history.

The defensive properties reminds me of the city-state times in Italy.

I hear you CivicFan....... I would love to go to China.

Those are 800 + year old bldgs!
That looks pretty high up in the mountains.

When I was a kid On the Big Island of Hawaii we used to have a school that had maybe 5-6 buildings shaped that way up in the mountains. It was a fairly new school. I lived in Kona at the time. I still to this day don't understand why the school was located up in the mountains for classes?

The company I work for does a lot of business in China and I have traveled in China. Interesting country but it makes you appreciate the USA. We have a fair amount of Chinese suppliers visit our factory in MI. With one exception they are very impressed with the USA and remark about the cleanliness of our cities. They also like our food.

Wanna trade places with them? I bet there'll be 800 people wanting to trade with your spot.

When you are worried about bandits attack up in the mountains and you have all these farmland around you to roam when you are out, being 'PACK' is the last thing you'll worry about.

Remember, these are 800 year old fortresses, not a 2010 Ritz Carlton in Maui. (Although it is now functioning as 1/2 tourist spots and 1/2 village residences) Captain Cook's cottage back in UK was pretty small by today's standard.

These buildings are now part of UNESCO world heritage sites. Urban legends said that when US first start having satellite images of the regions, we mistook these structures as missile silos.

These buildings are mainly occupied by a group of people in China called Hakka, they are the descendants of central/northern migrants over many centuries. Genetically identical, they are culturally different with their own dialects, own traditions, etc living in lands that aren't as fertile as the flat lands that native residents own, and they are hard to get to. These farmlands are small patches of flat contours on mountains. Due to the terrains, there's less government control thus bandits run rampant.

Also because of the foggy mountain terrain, they have excellent teas.

I will be honest with you; when I saw the title of this one I almost skipped it. I thought "Here, we go again!" and expected yet another rant on non-existent Chinese Quality :-)

Pretty bad when you need to go back 800 years to proclaim Chinese quality!
