You cant buy a generator engine for $99, that's why. Well maybe you could, but finding one with the right shaft could be difficult.
Yes you can, you just have to watch for when they're on sale at Harbor Frieght for $99. Or you can pay $119, and buy one off the floor.,,,

Because the $99 HF engine is not a tapered shaft engine and won't likely be a direct replacement. Your suggested swap is just a labor intensive endeavor. You'll have a few days labor into this thing, and you'll still have a Chinese genset of little value.

The con-rod has no bearing, it's just an aluminum rod that rides directly on the crankshaft. If the piston is undamaged, I suspect the rod is undamaged too.

What shape is this thing in?

$289 for a new one at HF right now.

For educational purposes, I tore the thing apart, bummer the exhaust valve broke because the rest of the engine was in like new condition. Yes these have a tapered crankshaft to connect to the generator, making it different from the $99 HF special, and of the side cover of the engine that mates to the generator is completely different.
