4.6 Ford engines are very quite, mine is with 210,000 miles. There may be a timing chain problem, if there is slude in it. 4.6ers must, I repeat must, stay very clean are there can be chain problems.

Change the oil to maxlife, pay for it, enjoy the truck when you drive it, and enjoy your parents while you have them.

+1

Are you sure it isn't detonation? If I run anything but premium in my Crown Vic, it sounds like the engine is rattling itself to pieces when I get on it. It's not, it's just that it's detonating like mad.

You sound like a candidate for some combustion chamber cleaner and a run in with some MAF cleaner as well.

That has all been done.

SeaFoam, Berryman's B12, hot water, Amsoil Power Foam, Carb cleaner. I've also run several bottles of Gumout Regane.

The car runs great, as long as I use premium.

Holy!!! Quite bizarre, since obviously the car isn't supposed to.

What year is it?

Had the same issue on my 97' Crown Vic. Not on my MarkVIII though, but it already recommends premium.

Ahhh, so no knock sensor IIRC, correct? That explains a lot.....
