Purchased a 2006 Chrysler 300C about 4 weeks ago. Love the car. The Hemi powerplant is awsome and a very smooth shifting transmission. I had a stash of Castrol GTX 5W30 on hand but the owners manual states to use only 5W20 because if you use another weight the MDS system may not work properly. Has anyone used any other weight oil and did you notice a difference? I can not tell when it goes in to that mode, it is a seamless transition.

It tells you on the information center in the center cluster. If you change your own oil (and it sounds like you do), simply mix one quart in with your favorite Xw20. You will use it up eventually.

Are you sure about the cluster? I have seen it on the Chevy Impala. Not on any Chrysler Cars. I have an HEMI Ram with the MDS. I have not used any thing but 5W-20. I would not use an other viscosity due to Chrysler issuing an TSB not use anything else. That is while it is under warranty.

My brother sells the Dodge vehicles at his dealership, and drives a Charger R/T. He said that when the MDS shuts down cylinders, there is a light on the dash that comes on. According to him, that is the only way he knows it is working. It supposedly is that seamless. The traction control and ESC also have lights that will come on if they are activated. He thinks that is cool, because it lets him know he exceeded the basic car's limit, and the computer must make adjustments.
Personally, I like the Charger's styling, and the numbers it puts out (HP, mileage, 0-60, etc..) are impressive. The technology is pretty impressive, too, with the MDS, ESC, TC,etc.. But one thing that annoys me is that the automatic transmission has no dipstick. Pretty soon, manufacturers are going to do away with the oil dipstick so oil changes must be done at the dealer, too.

There is not a light that comes on when my car goes in to MDS,and nothing in the information display.I would say it is working as designed as I am getting over 19 mpg on average with a mix of city and highway driving.

5w30 wont matter. Stay away from the heavier waits like 15w40, 20w50 etc. they will trigger a code to come on that tattles on you. I use 10w30 and Iam betting most service garages are using bulk 10w30 too. I would use the 5w20 in the winter and the 5w30 in the summer, you are talking minimal diffences that even a oil sample couldnt prove after its been in the motot.

Just got my '97 Jeep Wrangler up and running with a 5.7 Hemi from a '04 Dodge Ram 1500. 6K miles on the engine. Planned to change the oil today, but it didn't happen. I'm going with Amsoil series 2K 0w30 and EaO filter. I put about 10K to 12K miles on a year, so plan to change oil once a year in the spring. After spending $$$ on the engine swap, I'll probably still be driving it 30 years from now! That is if I can still climb into the thing (3" lift and 32" tires).
