Hey everyone, I'm relatively new here and wanted to see if I could get some opinions. I drive a 2005 honda civic with about 46000 miles on it. I just did the oil change about 1000 miles ago, and changed it to PP 5w-20. It had Mobil 1 0w-20 that I had changed it to from the Honda oil because it was a certified preowned. Anyway, I feel like my car ran smoother on the Mobil 1. What I mean is my engine seems to be louder and rougher while idling, and When accelerating it seems to give off more vibration to the pedal. The engine just seems louder and rougher in general. Do you think this has anything to do with the oil, or maybe It's just in my head? Let me know what you think.

Run the Platinum 5W-20 in one of my Honda Elements and it works great. Smooth, quite, can barely hear it running.

Go back to the Mobil 1 if you like it better. I know it won't protect any better.

Try a good 20w50 dino and see if the ticking goes away....just kidding.

Not really sure why that would be the case as PP is a great oil and may take a little while to acclimate to the car. I do not think it is anything to worry about.

You sure you didnt' put too much PP in your engine? What filter are you using? Some cars don't like being switched, I know because I tried a syn blend on a old S-10 with about 50,000 miles and it ran like [censored]. Once I went back to dino oil everything ran fine.

I just switched to Pennzoil Platinum for the first time and it sounds smooth and quiet. I've had it in the car for a little over 1,000 miles so far.

Thanks for the answers everyone. I have no doubt that PP is a great oil, maybe its just in my head, maybe its just getting acclimated. Anyway, my last oil filter came with a mobil 1 deal it was a fram tough guard. I now have a purolator pureone on there.

I use the PP 5w30 in my 97 Accord F22B2 and it loves it. I've run the 5w-20 before and had just as good if not better results. Pureone or Wix all the way.

Better stock up on the PP at Wally World while it's hot. I know I did.

different cars react different ways with different oils go back to what you *think* the car likes.
either way, motor will be well protected

Just switched my Forester to PP 5w30. Runs great, and did not notice any engine noise difference. Running regular purolator filter.

could just be that new oil overly sensitive sensor (yes, in your head).

im suprise it did that too.. your engine recommends the 0w-20 grade then huh? perhaps cause the PP is 5w-20 grade, maybe thats why? .. i would keep driving with this PP in your engine for another short oil change interval, then try the same mobil 0w-20 next time and see what happens.. if it runs smoother then the PP, then theres your answer, stick with the mobil 1 cause your engine likes it... sometimes when buying a new vehicle it takes many oil changes before you find the right one that your vehicle likes.. so far i've tried quaker state HM, valvoline HM and now im going to try YB dino (i said screw it to the high mileage oils, i dont think im benefiting it in anyway. i took my valve cover off and my engine is clean even after 103k)

My case is much different with OP. I tried PP 5W20, I bought on sale for $0.49/qt after rebate several months ago, in '00 MB E430 with more than 90k miles. It had M1 0W40 all its life because it is recommended by MB, immediately the engine noise reduced substantially specially at idle, even my wife noticed that and she asked what I did to the car to make it so quiet. The noise reduction may be was the result of going thinner oil.

Three other things I noticed:
First, gas mileage increase from average of 17.8-18.3 MPG to 18.5-19.3 MPG for 80-85% city driving. For highway, it went from 25 MPG to 26.5 MPG at 80 MPH.
Second, coolant temperature went to normal temperature much faster with PP 5W20, less than 2 miles instead of 3 miles or more with M1 0W40.
Third, PP cleans engine very well, it became very dark after only 1k mile and black after 3k miles and very black after 5k miles. I changed it out and I am using Chevron Delo 15W40 for cleaning phase. The gas mileage went down to 17.5-18.0 MPG for 80-85% city driving, which is worse than M1 0W40. Most city mileage are for trips with about 6 miles one way.
