HELP with oil filters!

Hi guys,

I did an oil change for my neighbor yesterday. Everything went well, other than the WIX filter I ordered from Amsoil was for a GMC sierra and NOT a Silverado like his is.

They both have the 4.3 litre motor, BUT the silverado has a deeper filter. The bases of the filter are the same.

I had my wife pick up a filter at C.T. on the way home. The only one avaialable was a Fram orange can.

He's running Amsoil XL, and will be going 6 months and probably 7.5 K miles.

Can I use the shallow WIX? will the Fram give him 6 months of use? I'll shell out for the proper filter if there is ANY chance of the Fram causing problems or if the WIX wont work properly. I just dont want to have to worry about it. I just wish GM would standardize at least ONE of their truck models. LOL.

The Fram will work fine.

It would not be my first choice for filters but it will work fine.

For 6 months and 7,500 miles, the Fram orange should be fine.

I would use that over the smaller WIX, due to filter area and possible internal (pressure bypass) differences.

I use WIX on my cars.

I just read on their site, they recommend the orange can for 5K miles and the tough guard for 7.5K

Thats what had me worried, but I hope it'll be fine.

I think my folks use a pretty basic oil filter for 6 month intervals all the time.

This just doesn't make sense to me.
Good oil, but a junk filter. I'd spend the 6 bucks and get the right Wix, or get a PureOne. I had a very bad experience with a Fram orange can of death. As a result, I won't even use them on a lawn mower. Especially when for a couple bucks more you can have a quality filter.
If it's really late, and you are stuck, most local WM's carry the tall, and short AC Delco filters.

for some reason in Canada Wallmart only carries Fram.

Their bloody everywhere. I might shell out and buy at least a tough guard.

We'll see.

This oil change has already COST me $5 and now for another filter......[censored] lousy. I don't want any issues though.

Sorry to hear about that, Do they have anything else at Canadian Tire ? If not, I'd just use the short Wix. My MIL's '97 Blazer has the 4.3 and she has been using short filters for 3 years with no problems.
You could always go to the dealer if needed.
Just pass your costs along to the customer.

So is this the Wix 1040 compared to the Wix 1036? They're interchangeable. Much like the different sized Honda filters (1334, 1356, 1365, etc.)

yes it was the 1040 Instead of the 1036, I figure it would defientely fit, just not why they changed the filter for one model vs the other?????

does your wifes Blazer's filter sit closer to the drivers side of the engine, bottoms up. conventionally I guess?

If so, its identical to the silverado engine. The short Wix should be okay then.

What do you think?

From what I remember, My Mother in law's filter is remote mounted in the front of the engine turned sideways, under a access hole.

The short, and long filters are interchangeable. I think you would be fine using the Wix.

There is absolutely no difference between a Sierra and a Silverado of the same year with the same engine. Exact same truck with the exception of a few minor cosmetic things. Oil filter is the same for both by year and engine. GM did not use a different filter on the Sierra than it did on the Silverado. I don't know what year this Sierra is but the filter for a Silverado 4.3L of the same year will call for the same filter.

AC PF52( long filter )was the filter by application for the older models( 99+ )and then that was replaced by the AC PF47( short filter )mid 2000's or so +/-. The same PF47 is used on the current 09 Silverado's and Sierra's with the 4.3L. Same oil filter just one is shorter than the other.

PF52 = Wix # 51036
PF47 = Wix # 51040

You can run either( pF52 or PF 47 - or aftermarket equivelant )and be fine.

My wife actually mentioned when she was in the store, that the Quaker State filter, was the short version, even though the Fram under the identical truck was the long version.

Just wanted to make sure.

I'd bought 2 of the 5 quarts Quaker State w/ free Fram the other day, and would have used them, but I have 4 Napa Golds and 2 Pureones still so I gave the Frams to my relative whom has my old car.
