Help me decide between Fram and Mobil 1

Why? What does either one of those features have to do with longer service intervals?

Which one is even accurate?

I haven't see a wire-backed TG or dual-layer Mobil 1.

Personally I would run the TG and change it every other time. The Mobil filter is better because of steel end caps, but unfortunately it doesn't have the dual layer media or wire mesh backing of the TG which is important for extended service (2 intervals). Kinda think I should not have mentioned it or start a war, but there it is.

The Fram ToughGuard is not a dual layer synthetic wire backed media, that is the Fram Ultra, which also has metal end caps.
The TG is a cellulose blend media with fiber end caps.

For most applications, the Ultra costs less than the Mobil 1 filter, and is overall a better filter IMO (better filtration, better flow and lower cost).
Not that the Mobil 1 filter is "bad", it just costs more than a filter that is better. It is a cellulose blend media.
The TG is on par with the Mobil 1 as for filtration and overall construction (metal vs fiber endcap argument not withstanding), and the TG also costs 30-40% less than the Mobil 1 filter.

IMO, the XG is going to give the best filtration efficiency and flow among the options.

Changing oil every 4k for me would mean at least 12k on an Ultra, and likely more.

In spin-on but not cartridge versions.

This post is regarding spin on filters.

Very few cartridge filters have metal end caps, a majority are plastic, with quite a few having either fiber or no end caps at all. Most aftermarket tend to follow what OEM is as well.
TG is a cellulose blend with no wire backing regardless of cartridge or spin-on.

To answer your question, I'd use the Mobil.

But I have a Fram bias. I'm still anti-Fram. I have purchased a Fram Ultra or two for other people's cars only to feel dirty afterwards. Sorta like I cheated them in doing their oil change.

What is wrong with Fram ULTRA?

I don't think their is anything "wrong" with an Ultra. I read hear "everybody" likes them. I buy one and put it on another person's car and then feel guilty cause I would never put one on my cars. It's just an irrational bias I have towards Fram. It may be the best oil filter out there but I just can't use them. I just associate Fram with cheap corner cutting.

Let me try and help you understand my bias in oil filters. Even the color of the cans affect my decision on which to use. Yellow and orange make me think of lower quality. White seems cheap. Black is the quality color. Does that help?

Unreal, I am honestly unable to imagine a more irrelevant basis for purchasing an oil filter.

And we've seen some other good ones too such as the number of baseplate holes and presence of louvers. But rest assured, paint color takes the cake.

LoL ... yeah, never mind what's inside the can, it's not important.

I never felt that way. I'd feel I cheated them if I put something from Purolator on their car.

I believe it's what is on the outside of the can that matters. That's how I judge a filter. I don't look on the inside.

Be honest, you wouldn't even put a Purolator on, right?

Been putting on Purolator filters for over 10 years haven't had one fail in all that time. Just took one off and posted in on my oil change just a few days ago.

Things are quite the circus on this Saturday night.

Your statement is like Vin Scullys call on the sixth game of the 1986 World Series when he said, " man are they up tonight at Shea".... After a guy parachuted into Shea stadium with a Go Mets banner waving in the wind ... They guy landed right in front of the NY Mets dugout...

True, guilty as charged! But maybe one day they'll win me back, maybe............

I think I need to start painting my filters black before putting them on to improve their flow and efficiency.

On a serious note, I prefer brighter colors as they show oil leaks and such better. It has no effect on my filter choice, but every cast iron block I build I paint either gray, orange, or bright blue.

I'd just get a Fram Ultra filter. Even if changed every 4k miles, you're still getting better filtration. I don't like using a filter for more than one OCI as efficiency falls off as the filter loads up. That $10 every 4k miles is dirt cheap insurance.

I think you have caught on to my little charade.

As long as you remember to paint the Fram filter black

Methinks the flat black would be the best choice.
