vehicle: 2002 dodge caravan SE 3.3L with 103,000 miles (166,000 kms)
location: atlantic canada
summer temp no higher then maybe high 80's F(25c), winter average is very close to 0 F (averaging a daily winter high of -20c, some nights are colder like -30c).

Driving conditions: 80% in city stop and go and short trips, 20% highway driving short distance (e.g. 10min highway drive). no towing, easy going, never hard accelerating, some idling but not over alot. i average about 500 miles per month total driving.

I purchased this van with 158,000 kms this past january from a used dealer, i changed the oil in april with quakerstate high milage conventional oil 5w30(which is the recommended grade for this van as per manual) and i installed a quakerstate oil filter.

mid august i changed the oil again to Valvoline maxlife synthetic blend 5w30 and put in a K&N oil filter. i've never done a UOA yet but will do it upon the next oil change.

I have a few oils i want to try next, the van does not burn ANY oil (from april to august i never had to put any oil in it and that was about a 3000+/- mile oci) the van also does not smoke or anything, its in pretty good condition, the ONLY issue i have is that i believe i have some valve noise, upon starting up the van (which always starts up easily) the valve noise will occur about 10-15secs after starting up the van and the "clicking" sound gets faster(not louder) as i accelerate. this is only if i have the hood open and listen in, the noise is harder to hear behind the wheel and while driving although i can still hear it.

so my question is which oil should i try to get rid of this noise and have a very very quiet engine (mind you i plan on changing the oil again around nov, right before the hard winter hits), the oils i have in mind are:

-just stick with valvoline maxlife 5w30 (although this oil hasnt really stopped the valve noise)?
-try valvoline maxlife full synthetic 10w-30 (5w30 is not available anywhere)
-try valvoline synpower 5w30
-mix in one quart of synpower 5w30 with maxlife synblend 5w-3?
-try castrol 0w-30?
-try pennzoil full synthetic 5w30?
-try this "new" mobil super 2000 high mileage synblend 5w30(only available in canada)

i like the idea of the maxlife since it has those addictives specifically for high mileage vehicles, but im willing to try something else if it will make my engine super quiet, budget is tight so i dont want to go crazy expensive and the pennzoil and castrol 0w-30 are the limit (1 quart of castrol 0w-30 is like $8 and no one sells the jug, pennzoil is about the same price, but oils like mobil 1 and mobil 1 EP are out of the question since they are like $11-$12 per quart and over $40 for a 4.4l jug)

i rather not be changing brands every time i change oil, im kinda trying to find one that i can stick with, the valvoline is the most affordable one, i purchased the maxlife synblend in a 5L jug at my local walmart for $19. so what do you guys think? (i will be using a motorcraft FL-1A oil filter next time)

You're one of the few that may benefit from a synthetic due to your location. With winter temps that low, I'd use a good synthetic 0w30 oil. I think the Synpower would be a good choice though too.

5W30 is fine (*seriously*).

I was using 10W30/5W30 back in my prairie days where campus block heater is on 3-hr cycles, and outside temp hovers around -37C and I can still start/run the car no problem.

*rest easy*

Q.

yea i mean a 0w-30 and a 5w30 are pretty much going to have the same weight when warm/hot, its just the cold temp thats different. i dont believe synpower makes a 0w-30 (if so its not available here).. and if i do try a 0w-30, i'd probably try the made in german castrol synthetic. right now im not to worry about using a 0w vs a 5w for this winter, i know a 5w will be fine. i dont know where to buy any petro engine oil (doesnt seem canadian tire sells that stuff) but i did read on their website about their "winter oil" etc..

mobil 1's are to expensive for my blood(or their overpriced up here in canada hahah). my van also has a block heater (at least i believe thats what it is?, its a extension cord plug thats hanging right next to the battery, its on the right side when i open the hood)

any Petro Canada gas station will stock its own oil, and you can run it all year around with no worries. Any 0w30 you could do the same. Canadian Tires sells a version (Motomaster) of the 0w30 oil that is made by Esso and it is pretty good too.

To verify it is the block heater plug it in when its quiet and listen for a hissing clicking sound coming from the engine, the sweet sound of coolant being heated. you only need 3 hours to get max warmth before startup.

that pdf file is indeed abit impressive, i never thought of to use irving engine oil, and their headquarters is right here in town hahaha, its not an oil you see locally like at walmart or canadian tire (or i just never noticed it LoL)

would any of you recommended that i try a 40weight oil on this van? im scared to try it since the manual recommends 5w30 or 10w-30. that irving max 1 pdf files recommends to use 5w-40 all year round!?!?

also why is everyone recommended i go with a 0w vs a 5w? is a 0w "that much" better then a 5w for the winter?

The Irving gas station I was in once stocked the 5w40, for around $7 but that was 3 yrs ago. Using 5w40, the van will bun more gas than with 0w30, which is what Irving wants you to do.

thanks, thats exactly! what i figured..

in regards to irving oil, looks like they have two synthetic oils.. max1 advance and another oil called Advant. that advant looks to be a "100% pure synthetic" (maybe pao/group IV) but its only available in a 5w-40 grade. i'd have to opt out of using that one since im seeking more of a fuel economy friendly oil :) ..

the vis cSt@100c for the max 1 0w-30 is 10.4 .. slightly less then what im using now (val maxlife synblend 5w30 cSt@100c:11.3).. would that be a factor? .. to my knowledge i was assuming i would need a oil with slightly higher cSt@100c to get rid of my valve noise?

so out of that list i mentioned.. which one would be best to get rid of the valve noise? i wouldnt understand how something more thinner would get rid of the noise vs something more thicker? (but not to thick you know)

I really don't think going to a synthetic will do anything for what sounds like a valve tick. Maxlife 5w30 is already a synthetic blend.

3.3 and 3.8 liter motors have an inherent tick. As a dealer I have tried to fix this noise 1 time. to see if I could. we went as far as replacing the entire engine and all it's accessory's. the noise came back within a couple thousand miles. Chrysler was not happy with us for trying to fix this "normal" noise. If it makes you feel better mine has had that noise for the last 225,000 miles and though it's a little louder than at 30,000 it is still running strong.

You could perhaps try one round of Auto-RX to see if that helps a little. I would be inclined to do that rather than spend the money on synthetics. The Maxlife you are using is already a very good oil. This UOA of Maxlife was 7,381 miles in a V6, and the oil was still good for continued use. Are you are still doing 3k miles (5,000km) oil changes? Motor oils (conventional) have improved a lot in the last 20 years and can easily run much longer than the 3k we were doing with the motor oils in the 1970's and 80's. You should be able to run that Maxlife 5k miles easily.

wow, that sure is a really good UOA of the same oil im using!. i'll be getting a uoa on my too upon the next oil change, just cause i havent done one yet so i kinda want to know how the insides of my car are making out.

right now i am not changing oil based on miles/kms per say but more by based on time, since i only put into the van about a mere 15-20miles per day on average(450-600miles per month!).. in a 6 month period i will NOT even top 5,000 miles. .. so right now im doing a OCI of 6 months(which usually is about alittle over 3,000miles/5,000kms), my first oil change was april(purchase the van in jan) second oil change was just last month, mid august. i plan on changing the oil again either nov or dec the lastest (since i do it myself, i dont want to be changing this oil in -20c hahaha) and im still under warranty until the end of the year so they dont want me to go to long(time wize) without changing it dispite the mileage/kms .. after this im certainly going to be doing a 6 month OCI though regardless, and again for me in a 6 month period i'll probably put less 5,000kms on it.

i just thought maybe a synthetic would "cure" the noise.. i cant believe that link though, wow. thanks

p.s.
i never heard of auto rx, heck knows if thats even available around my area
