I wonder if the issue exists with anaerobic gasket makers, or just their vinegar smelling RTV ones?

I only use anaerobic now. Might be worth spending a little more and avoiding RTV altogether.

Actually I wouldn't call the Ultra Black a vinegar smelling RTV as it really has little to no odor at all.

Also, when you say anaerobic what trade name sealants are you referring to?

Permatex therightstuff
Permatex anaerobic flange sealant or gasket maker
hylomar
loctite 518

I usually do as molakule suggested, but after applying sealant I'll put the cover back on and hand tighten all the bolts so that when the RTV vulcanizes it takes the gasket mating surface texture. I let it more or less cure and then torque the bolts to spec causing the mostly vulcanized gasket to remain under some pressure.

Ditto here. Do not tighten the bolts for at least 1/2 hour...it always works for me. And I also use the red high temp stuff along with rp maxgear. No lsd additive however.

Anyone ever use Honda Bond, Honda's branded OEM sealant? A guy I work with has built a lot of cars and said this stuff is expensive but extremely good. I've read some rave reviews across the Net as well.

After carefully cleaning mating surfaces and lightly mill filing dings, I used the supplied gasket and some teflon plumbing sealer on the diff cover on my son's older F150. No leaks so far, while the silicone stuff was leaking a fair amount.

The diff cover on my Dodge 11.5in axle just uses a 'rubber' gasket, which works fine.

unDummy, you've had good luck with The Right Stuff? Permatex says this is an elastomeric sealant and must think quite a bit of it considering the increased price vs. their RTV's.

I guess I can use the anaerobic sealants just like a normal RTV gasket maker by applying a bead and then torquing to the proper specs, correct?

Sorry guys for continuing to beat this one in the ground but I don't want to be losing $30 worth of fluid in a short time again and have to re-seal!!

Honda Bond is how I got turned on to using Ultra Grey in the first place. I was looking for an alternative to the $13.00+ honda bond and found that ultra grey was an approved alternative, in fact, after several cam swaps in my civic si I found the ultra grey to be every bit as good as the honda bond. Most of the guy's in the honda forums use ultra grey as well.

I've always used Ultra Copper and "THE RIGHT STUFF". I used the right stuff on my dad's 04 sierra (eaton LSD) and it's been leak free for almost 8 months now. I used ultra copper on the ranger's diff (has an LSD also) and haven't had an issue. On the Roadmaster, I just use a gasket

therightstuff has never failed me. Yes, it is too expensive.
The other anaerobic 'squeeze tubes' and 'caulking cartride sizes' are worth trying and can be applied just like any RTV.
