Would you say a conventional 15W-40 HDEO is a good oil choice for a Gasoline engine with a oil lubricated, water cooled turbo? i have a friend who has a 1989 Escort RS Turbo, stock 132hp, running between 10-15 psi of boost.

The factory oil recommendation is simply 10W-40.

He doesn't beat on it too hard but it gets up to 120mph with zero hesitation.

I have used it in my Volvo...but I have zero concern for any oil I put in it. It hasn't blown up yet, which is a pretty good benchmark I find.

I guess the "it hasn't blown up" is a good enough test

I'm constantly amazed by how well Europeans maintain post-80's era non-exotics. You just don't see this in the United States.

I guess the difference is the "peak" or golden era of American car culture happened in the mid 60s, after about 1974 American cars became soft bland and boring with few exceptions, that was the malaise era.

In Europe most would agree that "peak" , or golden era of European car culture happened from the mid 80s to the early 90s, but we have not in Europe really had any kind of a malaise era where cars almost universally sucked.

The guy has rebuilt the car from the ground up and has spent nearly 10k on it, it's a beautiful example of an Escort RS Turbo S2.

Do these have potential PCV issues like the later P2's?

I want to say the crankcase breather pipe on these isn't insulated with a coolant line for warmth like the P2, which was known to freeze and clog in the dead cold, but I doubt you have that issue. Lol.

And more importantly for me, the Americans have never, and the Japanese only just, understood ''handling.'' American vehicles have always sucked going around corners, the Europeans had it sorted by the '50's, and have just kept getting better. For a FWD car, those '80's Escorts handled very well. I don't push as much these days, my Volvo has me scratching my head about how a FWD car can feel like this... me mainly driving Japanese FWD cars.

Hi
That is a fine XR3i and RS turbo. As a Brit in his 50s I can appreciate these cars. I am especially envious of your Capri 3.0. Are you an expat enjoying the Catalan weather and culture?

I had an Opel Manta 2.0sr Berlinetta back in 82 and loved it. It was a 79 model with the 2.0litre cam in head engine.

Forgive me for swaying off topic a little but you had me reminiscing with your pics.
Tikka.

Oh, any chance of pics of the capri ?

Hi
Finland make very good Rifles hence my user name.
Your English is flawless hence I thought you were expat.
You live on a beautiful island that is spoiled by stupid, drunken brits. I have stayed many times near Arta at a place called Betlam. I loved to drive up to the lighthouse at Cap de Formentor and the drive down the Ma-10 is stunning.
Thanks for the pics and once again apologies for swaying off topic.

Tikka.

Betlem and Artà a re really nice, if i had the money i would move from my flat in Palma to a nice finca with a good garage around the Artà area.
The reality is i barely can afford to pay the bills and run and maintain my cars haha.
