What are the pros and cons to each? I'll be starting a second Auto-Rx soon and I was thinking of using Havoline instead of Castrol GTX. Thoughts? Concerns? Does it matter?

GTX has been proven over decades in 96 Countries spanning from Sahara to Siberia. All others are but mere pretenders to The Title.

Having said that, I am not too keen on the new "SM" GTX. The add pack seems to be really watered down.

I now use Chevron DELO. And I am getting ready to dip into my stash of "SL" rated Schaeffer Supreme 10w30.

Both are great oils.

The Havoline my car seems to like better, but neither will ever give me trouble. Go for the cheaper of the two.

Anyone here will probably tell you either one will do fine. For me Havoline hands down, I think it's one of the best dino's out there, and it's usually cheaper.

Exactly. If price was equal I would chose havoline. But either is a good choice. It would depend on price and if your engine seems to run better on one vice another.

But Castrol GTX has a Unique Anti-Sludge Formula in it. It says so on the front of the bottle; therefore, it must be better than Havoline, right?

US Blended GTX, I'm not sure I entirely trust due to third parties blending it (from what i've read). GTX blended by Castrol themselves, internationally does indeed hold a "title". So given my locale and situation, I would choose a proven performer: Havoline

I would choose GTX over any Havoline product. GTX is as close to synthetic in a conventional bottle than anything else on the shelf.

It might have a slightly weaker additive package, but that is because its baseoil is so much better than the competition.

Wow! No shortage of responses here. I didn't know people felt that strongly one way or another. Any additional thoughts?

Check the UOA section. Havoline shows excellent UOA's and the very least you can say about it relative to GTX is that havoline certainly doesn't leave anything to be desired when you compare Hav. and GTX UOA's.

I'll always choose the Havoline because it is usually about 1/2 the price of GTX...which is a relevant factor to many of us.

I started out preferring GTX until I invested a bunch of time reading the UOA's on this website.

Yes..but it's not UNIQUE. Castrol GTX claims it is UNIQUE, so it must be some very special stuff

Are You Serious?

Am I serious??? LMAO!!!!!!!!
Castrol GTX is unique...LOL

On a serious note...I really would be interste to what additive within GTX is unique which prevents sludge... anyone know?

Just to throw a monkey wrench into the works: Have you considered Phillips Trop-Arctic semi-synthetic ($1.48 a quart at Walmart), Chevron (available in some parts of the country for $.49 a quart) or Motorcraft semi-synthetic ($1.94 a quart at Walmart)? These are also excellent oils at a comparable or cheaper price than Havoline or Castrol GTX (which is now $2.29 a quart at Walmart).
