As most of you guys I am a car/truck nut. I just bought a 2005 Chevrolet Colorado I plan on running a 5w30 synthetic around 12-15 k. I am considering Havoline Synthetic. Does anyone know anything about this oil, the tbn, flash, etc. I looked in the voa section and did not see anything.

From what I've read and the people I've spoken with, it's an excellent oil. The specs for the GF-3 version were outstanding. (Noak 5% Flash point 496F) One of the most over looked oils on the market IMO.

Here is the PDS for the Synthetics. The conventional oils are excellent too.

Havoline Synthetic PDS

All additives are made by Oronite, which is owned by CVX.

Looks like pretty good stuff. Too bad it doesn't come in 5w-20 weight. Presently using Motorcraft 5w-20 for my new Ford Freestyle which I can only get from from my Ford dealer.

The SL Havoline Synthetic NOACK is:

5w30: 10
5w40: 8
10w30: 5

The linked data sheet for the SM shows NOACK is:

5w30: 13
5w40: 8
10w30: 7

I suspect the 5w40 was unaffected by SM because it has higher zddp than the others (EDIT, I see the 5w40 remains SL). Both 30 weights have lower zddp with the SM, but the 5w40 actually has higher zddp listed now than on my sheet dated 2002 and NOACK stayed the same. Interesting.

A couple of us here at BITOG use Mobil-1 in our Colorados with great success. Scroll down a week or-so over at the Used Oil Analysis board here for a recent Colorado UOA with Mobil-1.

Mobil 1 is a definite option. When did you switch to synthetic? In my Hondas I made the change around 8k.

I switched at 3.5K. In the spring, I substituted one quart 5w30 for 15W-50. For the late fall OC, I went slightly thinner & used one quart of T&SUV 5W-40. Zero consumption!

You should consider Amsoil it may be a little more in cost at first but when you start added up the cost of the other over the year it more then pays for it's self. I run the 0w30 in my 2004 GMC Canyon and I'm very pleased with the results. Everyone on this forum will tell you not to use the 0W-30 because it thickens. No more so then any other oil. If you don't want to go that low then try 5w30 There is also a comparison of several of the oils that have been recommended so far. I switched my Canyon at 2800 miles and later found that you can switch to a Synthetic at as little as 500 miles. I currently average about 21.6 MPG City/Highway mix. I'm headed for Las Vegas this weekend so I will find out what my Highway MPG, Will post the results upon my return.

Please do, I have noticed a slight increase in MPG with Syn oils if the car is driven long distances on the highway.

I might have to use Pennzoil Platinum based on the avalibility of the Havoline Synthetic, so far Advance is the only store that has it, and they don't have that much. Pennzoil Platinum seems to be everywhere. Wally-World even has it in 5qt jugs for around $20.

Buster:

Thank you for that link you posted on the 16th. That looks like a very good oil and is one I could consider for use in my cars.

Appreciate your giving that to us.

No problem. If and when I'm done with Havoline 5w-20 (after my M1 supply runs out) those would be the synthetics I'd probably use.

I've got 10 quarts of hav syn 10w30 SL from autozone clearance last year. I'm sure this group 3 stuff can make it to 10k 50/50 highway/city driving eh? I read the VOA of this stuff but no TBN. With havoline dino praised so much on this site, but no big users of the havoline syn.

I am using my AZ clearance Havoiline Syn 10w30 right now for 5k. I may get a UOA on it (depends on if my current UOA shows fuel dilution still). I did notice it was a very clear and easy flowing oil.

I wrote to [email protected] and asked about a Syn 5w20. Here was there responce.
Thank you for your inquiry. We will be coming out with Havoline Synthetic 5W20 sometime in the first quarter of 2006.

Back from Las Vegas my MPG was 436.4 Miles / 16.960 Gals = 25.73 MPG. I can't wait to see what it goes to when I do the Transmission

Gary,

Are you convinced the 25.73 MPG is better than you would have gotten before you switch to Amsoil?

I'm not trying to suggest otherwise. I just wonder whether you have similar highway driving experience with another product in which you know exactly what the MPG was.

No, I'm not anti-Amsoil. I know they are very good products. I also know we have several very excellent Amsoil representatives on this board who will be honest with us.

I also believe Havoline oils are excellent. I am particularly impressed with some of their synthetic grades that could very well be my next oil purchase when my current several year stashes run out.

krholm

I was getting about 300 miles to the tank before I converted (city/highway mix). 300 / 16.438 = 18.25 mpg Last fill up 329.8 /16.438 gal = 20.06 mpg. (I can get about 360 miles to the tank. [running on fumes]).

Have no idea what the truck got running Dino Oil on long trips. So I can't give you a yes or no answer on that.

All I can do is tell you what I know as fact. I will not lie just to get my customers to use Amsoil. (Yes I'm a dealer). I believe that Amsoil is the best on the market bar none.
