i've bought a BUNCH of it at autozone and i was searching for a VOA/UOA on it but no luck on the site.

10w-30 and 5w30 were my choices.

i have a lot of AA suregrip filters for my hondas and dodge's that i need to use and for the price of the havoline DS i'll have $5-6 dollar oil changes for the next year or so.

Here is my Halvoline DS UOA. (also ran it for 2 OCIs in the Toyota. No UOA but excellent MPG and performance)

Halvoline DS Subaru 5k

Its a good oil!

Moderators please correct the spelling in the title to Havoline.

It threw me off. I had to check google if a new oil was out.

It would be nice if the grade (5w30) was included in the title for searching etc.

Since DS 5w30 has a tendancy to shear out of grade and 10w30 PDS visc's are near competitor's 5w30 visc's, should a qt or two of 10w30 be used to thicken it up for the summer in a 6qt sump?

I am towards the end of running a 4k OCI w/ Hav SM 5w30 and noticed the pre-DS is definitely on the thick side; mpg has not been that great, engine not that revy, and sluggish when cold.

Don't worry about the shearing out of grade. The oil will still protect as well as something in grade IMO.

Very good oil. I've run the Chevron oil (a lot alike the per Ds Hal) and I can not tell the difference between the DS and non DS.

Lower MPG and revy/sluggish is normal for winter due to the temps and blends of fuel we get.

This year has been a major hit on my MPG in both the Toyota and Subaru. I'm wondering if its the change of oils I've gone to plus the gas companies making their blends worst this year.

My Corolla has gotten the worst MPG ever this winter in 103k.

My last tank in the Subaru was 4.73 MPG! (NOT a TYPO. I used 10.57 gallons to go 50 miles one way to work)

It only took 5 hours and 25 mins....

Sucked to be me that night...

They shut down the major parts of the freeway and frontage roads due to snow and heavy wind / drifts. I was happy to be in Subaru (I saw dozens of BMW, Lexas and other rear wheel drive stuck and even more large SUV stuck due to the slick roads (since there was gridlock, the plows could not get to the roads. It would not have mattered though since the blowing snow would have covered the road right back up)

Tons of cars ran out of fuel while in traffic. For a solid hour I went no where. Did not move even an inch.

It was bad. Then when I got to work the snow got even worst. My ride home though only took about 90 mins.

Again, was very happy to have the Subaru that night. It does not stop on ice for [censored] (like every other car/truck/suv) but it did allow me to pass on a steep hill a few times cars and SUVs/trucks that were stuck/spinning.

Very IMPRESSED with the new Goodyear tires we put on after the accident. They are amazing in snow/ice!

Bottom line, I got to work and got home safe. The MPG did stink though...

Take care, bill

PS: The place that the article is talking about was where the worst was. That is my 1/2 point to work....

thank you all for the replies! sorry if i spelled it wrong. i was in a rush to type and probably didn't even bother looking things over twice.

thirdeye, thank you for you UOA.

bill in utah, i've read many of your posts and looked over a lot of your UOA on different types of oils. i'll take your word for it that it's a good oil.

i've also noticed horrible mpg in my honda accord. this past weekend i took a trip to Kalamazoo, mi from akron, ohio and i believe i only averaged 27-28 mpg highway from my usual 32-34. cruise is set to 72-75 mph. granted the weather may had something to do with it.

Bill, are these tripletred's by any chance?

I could be wrong but I think the Havoline DS 5W30 actually starts out in the thick 5W20 range, rather than it shearing to that viscosity. I'm not positive on this though, perhaps someone else has a VOA of it?

Is that bad? I just bought 2 cases of Havoline DS on sale. I bought the 5w30 but that is what my truck calls for.

I hope not I'm in the same boat as you.

It can start with a thinner formula because the base oil does not shear and the additives are newer ones that can handle taking the oil to spec.

It's still 30 weight. Minimum 2.9 cP HT/HS (where as 5w-20 is 2.6). The UOA results have show that even in the 5w30 formula, it hardly shears at all, going from 57 sus to 55 - most other 5w30 conventional go from 60 sus to around 54. I think that's why they started with a bit thinner base stock with less viscosity index. I'd say, it's one of the better oils available. And when it goes on sale at Checker, I'm gonna load up.

I found the PDS for Hav SM 5w30. I'll listed both SM (May 05) and DS (May 07).

Test: SM, DS
cSt@40: 64.8, 59.4
cSt@100: 10.8, 9.7
Poise: 57, 54
VI: 159, 151
FP(F): 450, >392
PP(F): -33, -33
BN: 7.6, 7.8

Previous to running this OCI with SM, I ran the current Chev Supreme SM that is very similar to DS. That is why I said I noticed a change.

But no one said their car runs quieter or noisier with it. I'm going to try it for one interval before I start looking for specials.
