Many BITOGers used to believe that Chevron Supreme and Havoline conventional were identical or very, very close.....I'm not sure that's still the case.

Chevron does call Havoline it's 'premium' oil in the Q&A on this site.

Thoughts??

First off, both oils are top of the line. Don't let the relatively low price compared to other major oil brands fool you. Are they similar to each other? Yes. Are they identical? NO. Funny how things work out. While Havoline is their premium line, Chevron Supreme actually has the stronger add pack. Now does that mean when both oils are the same price but Havoline is running the $5 rebate (which it does a few times throughout the year), I'm still going to go Supreme? No, as you can see I'm currently running Havoline by my signiture below. I'll take advantage of that $5 rebate ha. To compare them closely: Havoline has slightly higher levels of calcium which is a detergent. Supreme has higher levels of zinc and phosphorus which are anti-wear agents. Moly, which is on the expensive side, when mixed with the correct base stocks has multiple benefits- which Supreme has significantly more of than Havoline. Boron which acts as both a AW and EP additive is significantly higher in Supreme as well. Hope this helps.

Havoline has been on rollback at Walmart in store for months now at $11.77. Havoline 5W-20 has been priced at $9.67 at Walmart.com for weeks now, and the high mileage 5W-20 is cheaper than in store too at $11.98. Get a price match in store, or just order it online, and pick up at store.

Havoline does have the small dose of magnesium now, and it's listed on their product data sheet.

Sources? Not that I am claiming "bullhockey" but rather I would love to see the data on that. I generally agree and the Chevron's Product sheets generally supports it.

Chevron has a tendency to tweak/alter/vary formulas a lot. From my memory about old discussions, Moly was high in Havoline at the merger, then dropped off during the recession, and then has been creeping back. Still, the variation between Chevron Supreme and Havoline might still be in the margin-of-error save for Moly. Actually, Supreme seems more like the old Havoline Formula. However, it seems that Havoline is definitely using a better base-stock... and Supreme is needing a more robust add-pack to overcome that weakness.

From Chevron taking the 5w20, 5w30, and 10w30:

Havoline has a lower viscosity index, a higher flashpoint (although Supreme is vague), has a colder pour point. Havoline list Magnesium, Supreme does not.

Supreme has more Zinc by weight. Has a higher TBN (Havoline is 7.4, Supreme 8.4).

I just like that the same company can't give you the exact same metrics.

Those PDS do seem to show that Havoline has a better base oil due to the higher Flash Point and lower Pour Point.
Either way they are both great oils. I'd probably choose Havoline in colder weather.

Use a HM oil - my personal favorite is MaxLife Blend, but my buddy just bought some of that Havoline HM at Walmart (w rebate) for his over 100k 08 Impala - for a future change. Yeah, full synthetic causes leaks in some old cars regularly IMO.

Havoline was the darling of the forum, the way PYB is now, when I first joined. It was available here locally at Rite Aid where they often put it on sale for $5 for five qts. It was also at some dollar stores but now it's only at the major national auto parts stores and the same prices as most oils. Advance does put it on sale once in a while...

That's an OLD test there gallydif. It was from 2011 the one you linked to. That Havoline from Wemay was from 2014 for both. And one can say that the Havoline 5w30 would be very similar to the 5w20 offering.

I've never run Havoline before because it isn't sold locally for me, but due to their recent banner ads here I did some investigating and found out how cheap it is on Amazon. I will be using Havoline HM for my next oil change.

That's a Chevy for ya, every high mileage 5.3, 6.0, or 8.1 I've ever worked on leaked like nobody's business. The Northstar V8's in the Cadillacs and Oldsmobiles were notorious for it big time as well.

The only way to fix a leak is do it right and put new gaskets in, changing oil types won't do much if anything at all. Once they start to leak, they don't just magically stop unless you run it dry.
