Considering how many quarts go into to the Honda and displacement of the engine....and comparing this to the size of a semi-tractor's sump and engine size...isn't the ratio about the same?

CRV 4 qts/2.2L Tractor 24/12

Unless I am incorrect in how many quarts the big diesel sump holds the ratio is nearly the same...

These semi-tractor comparisons are invalid and dangerous if acted on. There are too many vast differences. There are plenty of Accord UOAs that give a much more accurate idea of how bad it would be to do as pondered by the Master Acid.

ok normally i average 12K a year on my crv and change the oil once a year. this year has been abnormal since my step father has been in the hospital, ive put 12K miles on the crv in 7 months span visiting him. i still have another 4 months to go before my yearly oil change. but im already at 12K miles. thats 2K over factory spec. i know alot of guys here wouldnt even do 12K on a synthetic, muchless a dino. my car specs 5w30 and 6 yearly 10,000 mile changes. im running 15w40 diesel oil in it though.

so my question to you guys is should i change it out like my gut says to or brave through another 4 months. keep in mind im in florida and this is 80% highway miles that im putting on.

If your gut telling u 2 change it then do it! I always go w/ my gut feelings. and can i ask why are you runnung such a heavy wieght oil in that great little engine?

Okay I am not saying he should do big rig oci's from here on out...but in this instance if he needs to go a little longer because of extenuating circumstances...the motor will be okay...I read this guy's post I know he has tons of oil laying around...so it must be an issue of not having the time to do the oil change...it can wait until one can get around to doing it...whether it be next week or two months from now...In other countries this would be your run of the mill interval...

ok, im thinking of doing an oil analisys to determine if i should change or not. what do you guys think of that idea? would 1 single analisys even show any meaningfull data that i could act on? whos got the cheapest analisys one of the sand lot? im not looking for anything exotic. just a basic analisys. if the oil looks good at 12K, then ill just keep going untill you guys say stop, or change it next march when i do my yearly oil changes on all the vehicles i service. i dont want to go more than a year on the oci. if its bad, ill dump it and reduce my oci to whatever you guys think i should do.
does this sould like a plan boys?

First of all, I hope that your step father is doing better, and bravo to you for visiting him often!

I think that your oil has given you good service and you should change it now.

I have 3 Hondas and have seen the comment on this site many times that Hondas are easy on oil. Perhaps this is true - I know that they are easier on oil than my '97 Camry sludge-prone engine! However, unless there is plenty of evidence that your Honda model-year's engine is easy on oil, then I would urge caution on extending this assumption to every Honda. Toyotas were probably also considered to be "easy on oil" 10 years ago, but no more!

At 12K, I think he has probably used up all of his waiting until he has time credit.
If it were mine, I would take the twenty minutes to change it now.
OTOH, this Honda engine will probably run as long as Master Acid cares to drive the thing, even were he to extend his OCI to 20K.

If you're not going to keep doing UOA's on it, I'd just change the oil now. Cost roughly the same (change v. analysis), but as you mentioned, you don't have a base established from previous UOA's. So just this one may not be particularly helpful unless something is presently really out of whack.

Best wishes, Master ACiD!

Blackstone labs - $22.50 for the analysis and it will tell you plenty. They will send you a free sample kit - go to http://www.blackstone-labs.com/index.html

I've seen (first hand) people push dino this far with no apparent ill affects - japanese cars w/ over 200k on them and still running like tops - one ran 12k OCIs, others were out to at least 18k - I kid you not) - and that was in the early and mid-1990s. But their miles were probably 95% hiway. I remember one was a Toyota Celica, one Honda Accord, and the other a Honda or an Accura (?)

But you're at 80% hiway which will be tougher on oil than 95% hiway - you should seriously consider synthetic.

i just ordered a blackstone kit. merkava, whats youre problem? you have replied 4 times to this thread, each time you have provided nothing of value to the topic.

what engine is in this CRV? I have an element and am getting curious about this entire situation. I would never think of putting 15w40 in my honda, but maybe you're on to something.

Half-time in my SEC game of the nite, so I can post.

I don't remember Blackstone taking that long to mail a sample kit. Seems like it been good turnaround time. I do remember for sure that they have good turnaround on getting you the results once they receive the sample.
