GTX - Superior sludge protection?

Mokanic, I think that was pretty well said. As you sais, I think the oci you set and follow is much more important than the brand you choose. Great post.

I wonder why Castrol got booted off the GM 6094M list. Did they substitute cheaper base oil?

Castrol GTX failed the GM valvetrain wear test.

Castrol's more concerned about flashy marketing lingo than actually making a quality product IMHO. Other than GC, what have they really made that is so great? Nothing that I can think of....

Do they even have an oil that meets the HT-06 test?

Maybe my post is invisible to others. "Free burgers given right here!" Meanwhile everyone is walking right by him saying "Man I could go for a burger and none are to be found around here."

What's gotten a bug up your butt about Castrol? The many UOAs posted on GTX show this oil is a solid performer.

As for GTX failing the GM valvetrain wear test, that is an unsubstantiated rumor that I've not heard before his post.

G-MAN, I guess other than GC, I haven't been all that impressed with Castrol. Syntec has always been an avg oil at a premium price. They do the job, but I think they could be better. I just don't see a difference between GTX and any other good SM oil such as Havoline/MC etc.

Failing the valvetrain wear test doesn't seem right considering the stellar UOAs posted on BITOG. I would think it might be a cheaper base oil and failed the CCS test or something. Castrol might have been trying to maintain profits while not having to raise prices...Just a hunch.

I submitted a UOA about 3 weeks ago using Castrol Syntec 5W20 and the numbers look good for an engine with only 10,000 miles on it. I be the first to admit that the members here know a lot more then I do about oil but from my limited experience; Castrol Syntec does a good job.

Based on what?

UOA's of Syntec have primarily been of GC. The US stuff usually had low TBN over moderate to long drain intervals. Again, I just think it's average oil, no better than Havoline, MC, Mobil 1 or any other brand. It seems their better oils are in Europe and factory fill BMW's.

Yeah, but the subject of this thread is Castrol GTX.

I honestly don't know much about GTX. It's put up some great numbers. What I was getting at is I don't think it's sludge protection is any better than any other API SM oil.

The pre-SM GTX varnished up my and everyone else's engine that I know, so I do not use it even though the SM stuff might be better. The Syntec keeps an engine spotless in my experience, so why not just run that? The difference in cost is negligible, so the only reason to run a conventional is if the engine is burning the Syntec. In this case make the conventional an HDEO not the GTX.

I am guessing Castrol is using an element for their "dual" dispersant that does not show up on standard oil analysis.

For what it's worth, we have a 1995 Chevrolet pickup with the 4.3L V6 and my brother runs it hard every day. It has 340,000 miles on the original engine with absolutely *no* internal work done. He religiously uses Castrol GTX 10w30 and changes it every 4k or so.
