Group 3 vs 4 Oil

I have am considering switching to synthetic oil on my 2.4 L Honda engine. Cold temperatures where I live. The car has a recommended Oil change interval which seems very long.

Another problem is it does burn some amount. I want to switch to synthetic. Mobil 1 (The group 4 Oil) seems to be very expensive.

Canadian Tire has re-branded Shell Synthetic (Motomaster F1 Synthetic which is a Group 3 based Oil)

I currently leave the regular group 2 oil in for about 6-7 k. I was considering getting some better filters and leaving it in for about 12-13 k.

My question is it really worth the extra money to pay the extra for the Mobil 1 when the Motomaster Formula 1 Synthetic is more than half the cost of the Mobil 1 Oil?

Only difference I know,is grp III is still a dino oil and grp IV is an oil made from natural gas. How they do that,I have no idea :^P

Mobil 1 is not a group 4 oil.

So are you saying that mobil 1 has not gone from a primarily group 4 base oil to a group 3 (major)/group 4 (minor) mix? They laid it out so nicely in that vissom powerpoint where they claim that the vissom mixed base performs as well as a group 4 and that the conversion will be invisible to the customer.
 
There's no such thing as an oil that only uses group 4 basestock. All oils that contain group 4 contain group 3 or group 5 so that additives can be held in suspension by the oil.

Group 4 is yesterday's synthetic base stock. Group 5 Esters outperform them.

They are comprised and engineered differently. Comparing them on a linear, progressive format would likely be illogical.
 
Can a Group III base stock oil (Castrol Syntec, Pennzoil Platinum, etc.) be labeled as Synthetic oil in Canada?

You have been on the forum long enough to know by now G3 or G4 means squat nowdays, its the addtitive package etc and performance of the oil that counts.

Some have reported G3 oils out perform G4 oils in certain conditions. Don't wish to debate the issue, just do a search.
 
Who really cares!

All these oils will be more then good enough to keep your cars running great for years...

The reg conventional oils like the newer Pennzoil, etc are also more then good enough to keep your newer cars running for years.

If you change out your oil every 5K-7K miles, I really do not see a difference between using the newer conventional oils and the syns...
 
XOM made is clear in a press release (post Katrina - due to a PAO shortage) they were replacing PAO base stocks with hydrocracked petroleum. There justification was that a car will not benefits from the properties of a group IV/V base stock.

Do I believe it, not in the least. They wanted an excuse to continue making profit after their PAO shortage. Hook, Line, and Sinker!

That may be. But do you have proof that the new formulation protects engines any less than the old one?
