Can I use conventional, multi-purpose grease with 3% Moly for Constant Velocity Joint on my car?
* mineral/ lithium based;
* 182 cSt @ 40 °C;
* NLGI 2;
* 3% Moly.
* without EP additives.

What are main requirements for CV Joint grease?

Thank you!

CruzNlife1,

Please note that I am speaking about homokinetic ball joints, which really need the lithium based grease with Moly. The CV Joints tripod type generally needs another grease. The GKN, GM and Ford prefer polyurea hi-temp grease without Moly. The Glow Diffusion (Italian manufacturer of CVJ) prefers lithium-based grease without Moly. My personal opinion, it is profanation.

I'm a little surprised nobody is answering the question. Maybe it's a national secret or something.

Doesn't the car's factory manual mention the proper grease?

Red Line synthetic CV-2 for CV joints and wheel bearings contains moly. That grease works from -73°C to +260°C.

What kind of car?

In general there shouldn't be a problem with 3% moly.

I guess the requirements of a CV joint grease are typically the same as other demands expected of a grease. Good EP/AW protection, wide temperature protection, friction reduction, corrosion prevention, resistance to washout if boot tears...

You want good EP, moly or not. I'd go synthetic or Group II if possible to have less deterioration of the boots, as nafthenic tend to soften rubber.
I typically use a polyurea/group II, but Mitsubishi, Chrysler and Nissan are using my Hi-Temp Lithium Complex.
