I was looking through my stash and noticed I had 1 qt of Pennzoil Platinum 5w30. I'm not sure why, but I am dying to put it in my push mower. The mower calls for SAE 30. I think it'll be OK. Do you think there will be any foreseeable issues?

I guess the VIIs would wear out over time, but I do yearly oil changes and only run it about once a week.

* It's a LawnBoy with a 4-stroke Tecumseh engine.

I have no real reason to do this. I was just curious if there would be any problems.

The worst thing it will do is use oil. If your asking if it will blow up, Id bet my paycheck not. Those engines are about indestrucable, I believe any motor oil would work fine in them things. Not that I would do it, but I am sure alot of those things get SA oil unknowingly.

It's not a problem using it...but I would check the oil level frequently to see if your going to have consumption issues. More so with dino oil.

You'll be fine, it's been my experience that unless you long some serious hours, you'll change the oil before you experience consumption problems IF they occur.

I wouldn't spent the $$$ on Platinum just for the mower, but for an extra quart laying around, go for it. My lawn equipment does great running on frankenblends of all sorts of synthetics.

I always thought using a syn in a mower would pull out a bunch of junk, but the oil stays quite clean. Too bad Briggs couldn't build a car engine, they'd crank after 50 years.

5w30 is a multi vis and SAE 30 is a straight weight without the VII.

You might see higher consumption, but there is no risk.
Briggs gets most of the ink, but my two old Tecumsehs just keep chuggin' along.

No problem at all, like others have said, just watch for oil consumption. I have QSHP in my honda push mower right now. Honestly i think it starts better than when i had the 15w40 in there. It dont use any oil and runs great but it is one of those high torque lower rpm engines so maybe different than yours.

I would compair the specs of each oil. GC compaired to Amsoil 10W30/30W...GC is much thicker at operating temps. My Honda is using Amsoil 10W30/30W since thats what its speced for, no oil buring from spring till almost winter. I use the mower once a week for a few hours.

My buddy is using Maxlife blend 10W30 in his briggs.

5W30 synthetic is also the #1 recommendation of Briggs & Stratton for their air coooled engines, for all temperatures. Now, my Tecumseh engine calls for 30weight, but I haven't bought a quart of straight 30 weight oil in over 40 years.

I have Honda, Briggs & Stratton, and Tecumseh in my fleet of OPE, and they all get M1 5W 0r 10W30 oil. My mower, with the Honda 160 GCV OHC engine, does a one year, about 60 hour OCI with no oil addition required., and it is 10 years old and has about 550 hours on it. (I have an hour meter on it.)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't all of the usual 21 inch walk behind mowers running at about 3100 rpm due to a federal mandate on maximum blade tip speed?

I have no idea, i just know this is the first one that i have had that seems to run this slow. Maybe it just appears too, but it feels really like it is running about half or 3/4 speed. My buddy owns a lawn care business and he said that his mowers run the same. i bought mine from him as he sells his every two years and buys new ones. I dont understand his logic but that is what he does. The mower is one of these. http://www.hondapowerequipment.com/produ...elid=HRX2172VKA
This is not the exact model but very close. I think the ones he buys are 460 dollars.

Maybe it just needs adjusted, my little briggs sounds like it is screaming at full throttle and this honda seems like it is running about half that speed. It does cut okay but it bogs down a little in the higher grass. I dont use it much so im not too worried about it.
