Got a Transmission Flush (question)

K, Just got off the phone with my mechanic.
He told me that all three of my vehicles, 95 Chev Lumin, 2000 Dodge Caravan, and 92 GMC 1500 all have fiber filters, (not the mesh screen) and that those need to come out with each transmission fluid exchange? Would you agree?

Kestas,
My 2000 Dodge Caravan has 62k, and the trans filter was changed at 37k. I'm due for trans service very soon on the van, so I figure I'll just do the system flush without filter change this time. Then the next time, I'll change the filter out.
My Chev Lumina has 122k, and the last time I had it serviced, they also changed the filter, so I figure I can get away with just a fluid exchange this time as well.

your thoughts?

I think your plan is sound.

Chrysler transmissions scare me. Earlier 4-speeds were very problematic, and there was a lot of confusion on how to properly maintain these transmissions. I don't know about your 2000, but earlier 4-speeds specified Dexron II on the dipstick, while the shop manual specified ATF+3, and all savvy techs knew ATF+3 was the best choice. Make sure the specified fluid (ATF+4?) is used on that transmission. Some shops simply use Dexron on everything American.

Looking back on this thread, I can't help but see a parallel with issues my sister, a psychotherapist, has to face. She says some clients need guidance so they can come up with answers on their own. Others just want to be told what to do.

I'm trying to avoid the latter.

Kestas,
Both my vehicles state on the stick to use AFT/3.
Just as you stated, my mechanic advised me of this as well.
Thank you all for the insight. I think I feel ok with replacing the filter every other transmission fluid change. My 2000 Caravn's trans has been running flawlessly, (knock on wood)
Now watch, it will break down tonight

I just bought a new 2005 Honda CR-V with automatic. Honda uses a screen that can neither be changed nor cleaned without disassembling the transmission. A terrible design, in my opinion. My solution was to buy a Magnefine filter and install it in-line. This little filter has a magnet for metallic debris, a paper element to filter the fluid, and a by-pass if the filter media becomes clogged. Not too bad for a $25.00 part that can be removed and replaced with just a coupe of hose clamps.

On that 2000 Caravan, it depends if you have the 3 speed, or 4 speed transmission.
There are 2 types of filters, they are not interchangable.
If it is the 4 speed, get filter changed every time at 30,000 miles. Use the ATF-4 fluid. If you can find & afford a name brand FULL synthetic, use that.
At this time I would get a transmission cooler and discontinue the one used in radiator. When those rads start leaking internally, it's the end. It also depends how long you keep your vans, how often you trade them in.

My usual answer - "it depends".

How many miles on each transmission, and when was the last time each filter was changed?
