I did lots of beads with asthma. Your right not a good profession for me. Once you learn welding hard to get it out of the system. Welded up a trailer after 20 years, If you learn this profession! You should make $$.

I learned long ago how to protect my eyes and lungs from the effects of welding. I'm 67 this last Monday and still can see very well to do my work, even tig welding. Years ago many welders smoked so you can see why men get cancer.

I can't speak for your area of the country, but in the midwest there's a significant shortage of welders. There have been a number of news articles on the subject, and the pay that is being offered to qualified welders is quite substantial.

I can weld well enough to do a few repairs on my equipment and actually have them hold together. I often think that I'd like to take a few welding courses to improve my skills, but never seem to find the time.

First of all EXCELLENT. GREAT, solid, cool first step.

Well some places may have some social interaction some won't. Not that I'm a welder, but I think social interaction at work is HIGHLY overrated. After 30+ years of working, it's draining. It's the most draining thing about work. Just my viewpoint. At a small medium shop/factory at breaks and stuff - chat it up. Go hunting and fishing with the guys - absolutely cool. Perfect. But some people, not just females (mostly guys!) get whole talkin' rumoring partyin' junk down to some imperfect science. "This guy is quiting, that guy has a buttt rash, I'm anglin' for the boss..." and so on. Enough already.

GOOD LUCK!!!

A job with no social interaction is worse. You lose your ability to think straight. I do see what you mean though, you get people that babble on about useless garbage and you can't get anything done either. You have to balance it out. I can't find that thread anywhere. Do they delete them after a while? The thread said what do you do for a living.
