going from 0w30 to 10w40? pro's, cons?

I have posted up in the Racing section that I have an HPDE coming up in early March. The vehicle is a 2005 Dodge Neon SRT-4 with a 2.4L turbo charged 4 cylinder. I currently use Amsoil SSO and EAO34 filter for daily driving. I plan to switch to Redline 10W40 synthetic(non-racing blend) for the track event.

My questions are, what would be the pros and cons if I switch to the 10w40 now and use it in daily driving until the track day? daily temps are in the 35-50 degree range right now, and Im guessing that the temps in early march will be in the 45-65 degree range. Is there a better oil I should use for that day, or will the redline oils work out great for me?

you think I should stick with the SSO for track use also, or just until the track day?

What would be bad with changing to the 10w40 now?
 
I think you should stick with SSO for the track also. I don't see what the need is to change.

You could use 10W-40, but I don't see that you need to change it.
 
I am hoping that 10w40 will help keep engine temps down better than last time. Last time I was using TSO and coolant temps were reaching the 235 degree range. I am not really sure, but I was thinking that since the oil cooler and turbo have coolant lines going to them, the cooler oil temps would help keep the coolant temps down as well since the two are heat exchanging eachother
 
10w is thicker at startup. conversly 0w is thinner at startup. For racing situations you might want to try a 0w40 or 5w40.

oil pressure was around 20psi at idle, 30psi at 6000 rpms.

I will be installing an oil temp gauge before march

thats what I was thinking also, but im not an expert on oils, hence the reason I am here. the factory manual recommends 5w30 or 10w30 Mobil 1 for "spirited" driving, but I think a roadcourse surpasses "spirited".

I am just looking for some good advise on what to use.

Wouldn't it depend on the startup temps?
 
I would stick with the SSO for DD and the track use because if the SSO is holding up well under high heat and stress, then the only thing the 10w40 will do is cause the engine to work harder to pump the heavier oil. Which equals less power you will be putting to the ground and slightly longer spool time of the turbo esp when you're trying to keep your turbo spooled coming out of the corners.

not a typo....right now the SSO at 195 degrees on the temp gauge gives me 35psi @ 4500 rpm's. I checked this yesterday after reading Haas' report on oil pressures should be 10psi for every 1k rpms.


After testing out his theory on oil pressures, it makes me think I need something thicker anyways.. I really dont know.

I did have a conversation with one of the SRT/PVO Engineers that design the SRT line-up and their engines. They recommend Mobil 1 0w-40 for year round operation. I am thinking that early March, the morning temps should be around the mid 40's
 
I wonder if your oil pressure sensor has gone bad? My old Z31 turbo`s sensor quit working. It would fluctuate then it just started to read 0 psi all the time.
 
how often do AutoMeter sensors go bad? The gauge has always read the same psi's since I installed it last May. I have only used Amsoil TSO and SSO since around 1k miles on the car, so I dont know if a different oil vis would change things or not.
