My 01 kia usas 75w90 gl-4 or gl-5 in transfer case but my 02 sportage owners manual says 75w90 gl-4. What can i use safely.

I'm not familiar with the vehicle but I would say just use what they recommend. In some applications the amount of additive required in order to achieve GL-5 type EP performance does not agree with certain other components. GL-4 fluids, as a rule of thumb, are usually about a 50% treat of the GL-5, so less aggressive to some sensitive components.

Try BP/Castrol. I just found one there for someone else.
If you still can't get one let me know and I'll look around.

Check out "Chevron Manual Transaxle Fluid GL-4" in SAE 75W-90. You'd probably have to get it by the case at a distributor. The product number is 250260.

You can use this in both cars: Amsoil GL-4 MTG 75W-90

You are asking the right questions. Just don't use a standard GL-5 differential fluid.

Transfer case isn't going to worry about GL4 vs GL5 if change interval is reasonable(like ~30k). I would use whatever 75w90 you can find in your area.

For manual trannies, I would definitely avoid the GL5's. The shift quality is certainly better with Gl4 in manuals. Xcases are more simple then manuals.

Ford dealership have a 75w90 GL4.
Redline MT90, Amsoil MTG, Royalpurple Maxgear,.... as well as other brands are good GL4 fluids that can be used.

Again, since this is an x-case, I would just grab ANY name brand full synthetic GL4 or GL5 from your local autoparts store and not worry about it.

Probably use Redline MTL as well. Give Redline or Amsoil a jingle and get it from them. 2 Quarts are cheaper than 1 of the GM stuff when I last visited a GM store. YIKES.....

My 04 Subaru Outback calls for 75W-90 GL5 in the front transaxle. Shifting can be a bit notchy, and it absolutely does not want to go into first gear unless it's completely stopped. They specifically say not to use an oil with LS additives. I bought a few quarts of RL 75W-90NS, but I can't get the [censored] drain plug out! I bought the proper T70 torx driver and it just won't budge even with my 2' breaker bar on it. I think I'll have to let the dealer sort that one out.
